Dogs are basically nocturnal hunters physically. They aren't really adapted to be being active in the heat and warmer weather can be pretty brutal for them. I wouldn't say there is anything unusual in a dog panting like crazy after running around in on a warm day. I wouldn't worry about them dehydrating or anything, they'll drink they they are thirsty.

I used to go walking by the sea and throw the ball into the water during the summer. That seemed to keep her pretty cooled off, although she's too old to be bothered with that now.

Cat people, I have a question for you. Girlfriends cat has been missing for 2/3 days now, she's worried sick about him. Do they often just go wandering for a bit and then stroll back?

Sometimes yeah. Part of the problem is some people love letting other peoples cats into their homes and feeding them, so they end up constantly going back for the attention. I hope he's ok, I'm sure he is.

I was throwing the ball for Max this afternoon in beaming sunshine. He was panting like crazy, with his tongue at full stretch and yet I had to haul him over to me and practically force him to drink water.

I had a springer spaniel that was really strange about drinking water, like she had stage fright or something. She'd sit making a really sticky drink swallowing sound for ages but wouldn't drink the water that was right next to her, but if I went over and scooped some into my had shed lap it up as she was clearly really thirsty. I found that if she then did take a drink, if she knew you were watching she'd stop drinking, like you were going to tell her off. Used to have to almost stand in silence if you knew she was drinking in case she heard you and stopped. Eventually we managed to give her praise when she drank and it became a thing she'd just do.

Half 1 we heard a load of banging around downstairs, he was coming back at night and leaving in the morning, Jen had closed the cat flap or something. He was making really strange noises, So whatever. At least he's back.

Nah swanned back off out this morning. She won't be so worried though if he goes walk abouts for a few days though hopefully, she's going to lock the cat flap every night though so they can get in but can't get out.
See how it goes over the next few days.

There's a cat that regularly visits our house throughout the summer, turns out its owners leave it with their idiot (adult) daughter for 3 months while they go to their house in Spain.

Said idiot seemingly doesn't bother feeding it as it's really thin and wolfs down any bits of meat we give it.

That's strawberry floating weird. But, yeah, I do give him lots of praise when he drinks to try to encourage him to do it, like you say.

I keep well hydrated myself, so maybe I overestimate how much water the dog needs.

Anybody have any tips for keeping cats out your garden? We're getting one shitting in both the front and the back.

The owners would, I'm sure, be quick enough to complain if I was letting my dog gooseberry fool in their garden, so I'm not sure how this is ok, bar the fact they don't know it's happening.

strawberry floating annoying isn't it?

Do you have a fence around your gardens? I have a 6 foot fence/wall around the back and 5 foot railings around the front. Sometimes when I see a cat in the garden, I accidentally leave the door open slightly and Raja manages to get out. His 0-cat running speed is quite impressive, as is how far he can jump up the fence. He hasn't been successful in talking to any of the cats yet, but clearly he tries as when leaping up the fence I have seen his mouth open so he can say hello to the cat trying to clamber over the fence.

 I'll bear that in mind. Nala does seem to like cats (despite that one attacking her that time) and if I get the opportunity to introduce to them on a more informal basis then I'll try to take it.

There was an article on MSN this morning (from The Guardian I think) that said cats can contribute towards blindness/eye problems. It is OK therefore to shoot them as Moggy suggested or if you catch one, I'll bring Raja round to show Nala how the cat and dog relationship is supposed to work.

Might get a mouse so they can gang up on the cat, with hilarious consequences.

My parents are moving house on Friday, so I'm moving out on Thursday and going to London to stay with my brother before I move into my own place.

I'm so gonna miss living with little Max. :(

So my dad has two Labradors that he and mum got when I was in my 20s and still lived at home, so they're long time family pets and I love them to bits.

He's decided to basically tell me to strawberry float off and never contact him again and has now given the dogs to some complete strangers, despite knowing we would have them when he was too ill to look after them.

banana split. Those poor dogs :|
