PostThe Pitch Drop Experiment - LATEST UPDATE!
by BID0 » Mon Jul 10, 2017 9:22 am

The pitch drop experiment is a long-term experiment that measures the flow of a piece of pitch over many years. Pitch is the name for any of a number of highly viscous liquids that appear solid, most commonly bitumen. At room temperature, tar pitch flows at a very low rate, taking several years to form a single drop.

This drop is particularly historic because we are on the cusp of the 10th drop

This reminds me of the time I had no fibre in my diet for a couple of days and then tried to go toilet.

I watched it for a minute but the tension was overbearing. Like playing Doom 3 in the dark with 5.1 audio.

Hold on - wasn't the 9th drop only a couple of years back? Isn't it some thing like 10 years between drops? I've got better things to do than sit and watch this for next 8-10 years! :D

You're lucky it was only a couple of days; I do a 'pitch drop experiment' every evening. :(

Is it wrong that watching this makes me want to push the whole thing over and ruin the experiment?

What I always remember about this experiment is that the guy overseeing it for 50 years never saw a drop fall. The first and second times (when he was in charge) happened over the weekend. The third (this is the most tooth gnashing one) happened when he popped out of the lab to make a cup of tea

He died in August 2013. The next drop fell a mere eight months later.

Ah the great 9th drop controversy. There are two sides to this argument, I don't know which side you fall on but basically the 9th drop happened back on 17 April 2014, HOWEVER some claim it didn't count officially as it didn't separate from the funnel and the ninth drop touched the eighth drop in the beaker below it. I still count it so this next drop is the tenth drop and anyone who argues otherwise is WRONG.

Professor White decided to replace the beaker holding the previous eight drops before the ninth drop fused to them. While the bell jar was being lifted, the wooden base wobbled and the ninth drop snapped away from the funnel

Ah, so presumably there is still a significant amount of drop still pre-formed which is why we might be expecting a new drop so soon after this controversial "ninth" drop?
