Carillion to go into liquidation
Construction giant Carillion is to go into liquidation, threatening thousands of jobs.

The move came after talks between the firm, its lenders and the government failed to reach a deal to save the UK's second biggest construction company.

However, the government will provide funding to maintain the public services run by Carillion.

The firm is involved in major projects like the HS2 high-speed rail line, as well as managing schools and prisons.

It is the second biggest supplier of maintenance services to Network Rail, and it maintains 50,000 homes for the Ministry of Defence.

The company has 43,000 staff worldwide - 20,000 in the UK. It is not clear yet how those staff will be affected.

Some of Carillion's contracts will be taken on by other firms and some could be renationalised, according to BBC business editor Simon Jack.

Thousands of current and former staff have money in Carillion pension funds. Those funds will now be managed by the Pension Protection Fund (PPF).

A spokesperson from the PPF said: "We can confirm that we have been notified of the liquidation. We know this news will raise serious concerns for all people involved. We want to reassure members of Carillion's defined benefit pension schemes that their benefits are protected by the PPF."

Carillion chairman Philip Green said: "This is a very sad day for Carillion, for our colleagues, suppliers and customers that we have been proud to serve over many years.

"In recent days, however, we have been unable to secure the funding to support our business plan and it is therefore with the deepest regret that we have arrived at this decision."

Shadow business secretary Rebecca Long-Bailey said Labour wanted a full investigation into the government's dealings with Carillion: "This company issued three profit warnings in the last six months, yet despite those profit warnings the government continued to grant contracts to this company."

She added that she did not want the government to take on the contracts that were loss-making, while selling the profitable ones to other private companies.

'Disastrous news'

Bernard Jenkin, the Conservative chairman of the House of Commons Public Administration Committee, said: "This really shakes public confidence in the ability of the private sector to deliver public services and infrastructure."

He said there needed to be a change of "mindset" at companies that do a lot of work for the taxpayer.

"You've got to treat yourself much more as a branch of the public service, not as a private company just there to enrich the shareholders and the directors," he said.

"Ironically, Whitehall tends to do contracts with companies that it always does contracts with, because that's the safe thing to do - that's the perception. A great many small and medium-sized companies feel excluded."

Mick Cash, the general secretary of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union, said: "This is disastrous news for the workforce and disastrous news for transport and public services in Britain.

"RMT will be demanding urgent meetings with Network Rail and the train companies today with the objective of protecting our members jobs and pensions.

"The infrastructure and support works must be immediately taken in house with the workforce protected."

Rehana Azam, national officer of the GMB union, said: "What's happening with Carillion yet again shows the perils of allowing privatisation to run rampant in our schools, our hospitals and our prisons."

UKIP leader Henry Bolton says he has ended his relationship with his girlfriend after she reportedly made racist comments about Meghan Markle.

He said their romance was "obviously quite incompatible" with his role as party leader but he had no intention of resigning.

Jo Marney had sent texts saying black people were ugly and Prince Harry's fiancee would "taint" the Royal Family.

Mr Bolton said it was against UKIP's constitution "to be racist in any way."

UKIP’s constitution says no racism.

Senior party members have questioned Mr Bolton's judgement, calling his private life an "unhelpful distraction".

Mr Bolton told BBC Breakfast Ms Marney's comments were made "some time ago".

He said they were "utterly indefensible" but there was "some context to them" which will be revealed in time.

Is the context that she’s a massive racist?

Just seen that Virgin trains are going to keep stocking the Mail :fp: If they hadn’t tried to politicise it literally no-one would have minded. Instead they’re like “oh we don’t agree with it”, then everyone who reads the mail respond with “oh obviously our money doesn’t agree with you either” and they give up.

I purchased the new look tabloid Guardian yesterday and couldn't believe it was £2. 2 strawberry floating quid for a weekday newspaper, with the vast majority of it online for free. I mean The Times is £1.60, Telegraph £1.80...they're mentalists.

They said the Saturday edition is going to come with FIVE magazines/supplements/pulls-outs, so strawberry float knows how much that is going to cost.

The private eye is £2 now and I've balked at that and it only comes out once a fortnight.

I was actually surprised how cheap Private Eye was, considering something like the Economist/New Statesman/ Prospect/Time is like £5/6.

Tory MP Ben Bradley sorry for 'vasectomies for unemployed' posts
The Mansfield MP, recently promoted by the Theresa May, is being criticised for his 2012 comments about benefits claimants.

A Tory MP recently appointed to a prominent party position has apologised after it emerged he had written a blog post suggesting benefit-claimants should have vasectomies.

Ben Bradley, who was promoted by the Prime Minister this month to become Conservative vice chairman for youth, wrote the UK could be "drowning in a vast sea of unemployed wasters" without a cap on welfare payments.

In a 2012 post on his personal blog, titled consbradders32 and uncovered by Buzzfeed News on Tuesday, the Mansfield MP wrote: "Sorry but how many children you have is a choice; if you can't afford them, stop having them! Vasectomies are free."

He added: "Families who have never worked a day in their lives having four or five kids and the rest of us having one or two means it's not long before we're drowning in a vast sea of unemployed wasters that we pay to keep!"

The blog has since been deleted.

Apologising for the posts, Mr Bradley said: "My time in politics has allowed me to mature and I now realise that this language is not appropriate."

Cat Smith, Labour's shadow minister for youth affairs, said: "These repulsive comments expose the Tories' disgraceful attitude to unemployed people.

"That they come from a man Theresa May chose as a vice chair of her party speaks volumes. The nasty party is alive and well."

Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran said: "These hugely misinformed and offensive comments should shame Mr Bradley and the Tory party.

"It beggars belief that someone who has shown such contempt for young people who are out of work has been tasked by the Prime Minister to improve her party's appeal with young voters.

"This is another example of a shocking lack of due diligence by May and her team when making appointments to influential roles. This seriously draws their judgement into question."
