There's no certainty the Nazis would've failed if they hadn't ballsed their own tactics up and MLK was one part of a massive group of people and organisations who pushed for civil rights in the 1960s, most of whom really don't get enough credit.

You are probably right, I was just writing a quick post and trying to use famous examples of people getting the credit for things that were probably inevitable.

Another Cameron/Clegg thing that I give them credit for is upping the threshold for tax, I think pushing it up to over £12k was a decent thing to do (even if the higher tax rate was reduced).

I didn't plagiarise for mine, unlike Dr. King...

All joking aside though, I completely agree with the point. I'd go as far as to say that nothing is genuinely "inevitable," and that whether they side with popular opinion or not, those who effect change should be applauded for it. Unless they're bastards.

If there was any doubt cows don’t want to spend their life cooped up indoors...

Remember this next time someone brings up that these mega cow sheds or milking facilities are absolutely fine (USA).

Has Dacre been secretly ousted?

In the late 90s the Daily Mail had a high black readership amongst the over 65s, though I don’t know about now.

Mail has been campaigning on the environment now for years, dating back to supermarket plastic bags.

I think it’s good that so many in positions of power are big environmentalists, whether that be those in media (Sky and the WWF), government (Gove) or food (Waitrose and Duchy Originals, Sainsbury’s and the MSC). Stark difference to the US, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens when the government has to get round the negotiating table...I predict more than a few of Prince Charles’ infamous letters.

Some pretty blatant lies from May in PMQs today.
First she says that Albert Thompson (guy refused cancer treatment that Corbyn bought up a few weeks ago) has been contacted by home office and will receive treatment. Before Corbyn's even finished his questions it is confirmed that he has not been told anything.

Then she tries to blame Labour for destroying the Windrush documents.

Because we know when the documents were destroyed?

Moggy wrote:To solve the Windrush crisis, why don’t we just look at the landing cards?

The Home Office destroyed thousands of landing card slips recording Windrush immigrants’ arrival dates in the UK, despite staff warnings that the move would make it harder to check the records of older Caribbean-born residents experiencing residency difficulties.

A former Home Office employee said the records, stored in the basement of a government tower block, were a vital resource for case workers when they were asked to find information about someone’s arrival date in the UK from the West Indies – usually when the individual was struggling to resolve immigration status problems.

Although the home secretary, Amber Rudd, has promised to make it easier for Windrush-generation residents to regularise their status, the destruction of the database is likely to make the process harder, even with the support of the new taskforce announced this week.

The former employee (who has asked for his name not to be printed) said it was decided in 2010 to destroy the disembarkation cards, which dated back to the 1950s and 60s, when the Home Office’s Whitgift Centre in Croydon was closed and the staff were moved to another site. Employees in his department told their managers it was a bad idea, because these papers were often the last remaining record of a person’s arrival date, in the event of uncertainty or lost documents. The files were destroyed in October that year, when Theresa May was home secretary.

That's a shopping centre. :fp:

The Home Office is called Lunar House (or as it's internally known, Loony House).

I don’t know Croydon at all, but it appears that the Home Office does have offices in the Whitgift Centre.

Home Office in Croydon is/was spread across many buildings, including Loony House, Appauling (Apollo) House and Electric House... There were some in the offices around the top end of Whitgift Centre...

Quite a few have closed down over the years though, including the one on the tram stop where I did my work experience because I couldn't be bothered to find anything myself...

Just had a look on the map, it appears to be the grotty building next door (sat between a carpark and the loading bay of a Sainsbury's). I was just about to say, fancy having the immigration department in a dilapidated shopping centre. :dread:

The proper building is right across the street. As an aside, less than 5 minutes away is one of the most hideous looking 'rich man apartment blocks' I think I've ever seen in my life, that ominously towers over everything. Imagine having £750,000 to play with and you decide to buy an apartment in Croydon town centre.

I think the destruction of these cards isn't the issue here. The onus, in this case, should be on the government to prove that these people shouldn't have residency not the other way round.

They'll be laughing when Westfield gets built :datass:

Is that the one with the Tesco Express underneath it?

For the Windrush generation, I agree. As it stands, to prove your residency you have to be able to show 4 pieces of documentation for every single year that you have lived here. That is absolute madness.

The destruction of the cards is appalling from a historical record point of view as well. There is so much rich history preserved (either physically or digitally) out there, it is a shame that people will not be able to view those cards in the future.

That's interesting. I guess that's where the "blame Labour!" thing came from.

It is absolutely crazy that those records were not digitised.

I thought it was 1 document per year you've been here. Crikey. Even that would be virtually impossible to get, 4 is out of the question.
