A senior Conservative is to urge Theresa May to target the wealth of baby boomers to prevent their children’s generation being forced to stomach a 15p rise in income tax to cover the spiralling cost of healthcare, education and welfare.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... -tory-peer

Heard about this on the radio whilst driving this morning and did a hearty LOL. Those poor rich bacon-faced boomers. No doubt they'll foam at the mouth, kick up a stink and demand that younger generations need to be giving or doing more or claiming victimisation.

That's about as likely as me becoming the next Pope, they're never going to target their main support base.

This, the Tories are not going to piss off their core support like that.

A few years ago nobody would have thought the Tories would suddenly start trying to piss off businesses with massive uncertainty or introduce a dementia tax.

Can't imagine they will do that. Even though they should.

True.

I guess it is possible that May will think that baby boomers will see Labour as a bigger threat to their wealth and so still vote Tory even if the Tories are taking more from pensioners. I just don’t think May is that crazy, although the last couple of years probably should have convinced me that modern Tory PMs really are that crazy.

Maybe it's her way of pissing off the majority of the people responsible for her having to deal with the headache that is Brexit.

Financial Times via BBC News wrote:This weekend France will finalise legislation which will allow for a big round of privatisation, the Financial Times reports.

The first likely candidate is the sell-off of Aeroports de Paris (AdP), the operator of Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports.

The government currently owns 50.6% of AdP, worth around €8bn.

Stakes in energy firm Engie and the state lottery company Francaise des Jeux could also be up for sale later in the year.

How very Tory of them.

Not to mention that a Tory government killed the desirability of BTL with 3 significant changes:

Additional rate stamp duty (300k costs 14k upfront whilst FTB pays £0)

Harsher rental stress tests (25% deposits rarely work, now need more like 40% of purchase price)

Taxed on revenue rather than profit (since only 20% of the annual mortgage interest can be deducted)

It's cause May is from the more authoritarian wing of the Tory party. She's all about law and order not big business.

Macron, Renzi, they all dream of being Tony Blair.

Not even Tony Blair wants to be Tony Blair anymore!

Well that could be a car crash of a television program.

It's Nick Robinson, everyone will try and answer without looking like a racist. Might be worth setting up some kind of racist bingo to play along with the program. 'Some of my best friends are Polish' etc.

Essentially though they don't want any Johnny Foreigners coming over here and filling up half a supermarket aisle with their weird foods.

Isn't it a bit late to be asking that question when net migration is already running at 200,000+ per year?

Mr Corbyn's been 'mansplaining' it seems.

That really sums up May and the media perfectly. He asked her a serious question about her Saudi weapons deals and human rights abuses, but May has a go at him for mentioning International Women's Day (I'm sure she had another witty attack ready if he hadn't mentioned it) and that joke is the bit that gets reported. They even cut his question out of the clip, it was only a few extra seconds.

BBC News wrote:Two men have been arrested after a video of racist slurs being shouted in university accommodation emerged.

Rufaro Chisango tweeted the video of the abuse which apparently included "we hate the blacks" while locked in her room at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) halls of residence on Wednesday.

NTU has suspended the "suspected perpetrators" pending inquiries.

Two 18-year-old men have been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated public order offences.

Miss Chisango, who filmed the chanting on Monday evening, tweeted: "yoo I'm fuming, the way people in the same uni halls as me are chanting 'we hate the blacks' outside my bedroom door.

"Words cannot describe how sad this makes me feel, in this 2018 people think this is still acceptable."

She told the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire programme she "felt really shocked, isolated and uncomfortable" when she heard the "shouting outside my door".

"It was a big impact obviously, when it happened. It shouldn't be tolerated at all."

Miss Chisango had reported the abuse to the university halls of residence reception on Tuesday, but the NTU was only informed on Wednesday.

She said: "It shouldn't have [taken] such a long delay when I reported something like this.

"I just want the appropriate action to be taken."

NTU said it was "shocked and appalled" to see the video and was investigating "as a matter of urgency".

"We are also working with our accommodation partner to understand why the university was only alerted to this on Wednesday evening after this was reported to them in the very early hours of Tuesday.

Nottinghamshire Police said: "We treat hate crime as a priority."

Labour MP for Tottenham David Lammy said: "My heart breaks for this young woman and I have the utmost respect for her bravery in speaking out."

Ilyas Nagdee, 23, National Union of Students officer representing students of African, Arab, Asian and Caribbean descent, said these experiences are "common".

"We've seen examples of incidents like the racist writing on bananas at Warwick, the Confederate flag at Manchester and now shouting through the door in Nottingham.

"These are just the stories that go viral over social media. But unfortunately this is the day-to-day experience of students of colour across the country and it has been going on for decades.

"I'm contacted at least a couple of times a week by students asking me for help after experiencing racism."

So much for the supposed idealistic liberalism of UK universities...
