PostThe potential perils of PS3 games in 1080p...
by Eighthours » Sat Dec 26, 2009 9:05 am

Ever since I bought my PS3, I've been playing games in 720p. Today, however, I'm buying a full 1080p telly. Hooray! But that got me thinking about what I've heard regarding 1080p with the PS3, that certain games simply run better in 720p and are actually far worse at the higher resolution, unlike the 360 with its nice scaler.

So, is this true? Should I be chopping and changing between 720p and 1080p depending on the game? Is there a list somewhere of the optimal resolution setting for individual games? Or have I been listening to the Internet far too much, and actually everything's fine? Over to you, chaps.

Nothing to worry about in my experience.

Just have both 720P and 1080P ticked in the display settings and then when you play a game it will play in 1080P if it's supported or 720P if it's not. You shouldn't have any problems.

There are problems I'm afraid.

The whole point of a 1080p set is that you actually get 1:1 1080p. Now very few PS3 games are native 1080p and even some that state they are on the box are in fact software scaled as the PS3 has no internal scaler.

This means you are at the mercy of your Tv's scaler and these vary wildly from set to set. 95% of PS3 games will be blown up 720p images which means you will not get 1:1 pixel mapping or "Just Scan" on your Samsung settings. You may get "overscanning" where the TV actually makes the picture slightly bigger than 1920 x 1080 and you lose some picture as a result.

There is obviously a loss in picture quality anyway with scaling so games may actually look slightly worse on your new set if they are 720p. The other thing to note is that when switching from one device or one game to another that once the set receives a 720p signal it will turn off "just scan" and you will have to turn it back on every time you want true 1080p.

So basically apart from BluRay films the PS3 is a bit of a pain on a 1080p set, for stuff like Wipeout HD it is amazing but for a lot of other stuff a scaled 720p image isn't showing your TV off in the best light.

Just check your Samsung picture settings and then go to "size" to make sure "Just Scan" is on for your 360 and 1080p PS3 stuff.
