The PS3 will never have cross-game voice chat. Here's why:

PostThe PS3 will never have cross-game voice chat. Here's why:

Did we know this before? If not, then finally we have a straight answer about this long-running saga. There isn't enough RAM, it can't be retrofitted, so our dreams of party chat across PS3 games will remain unrealised FOREVER.

Cross-game voice chat is not possible on the PlayStation 3 because of memory restrictions, Sony has revealed.

The PS3's RAM is gobbled up by the games it runs, which prevents the much-desired feature from being implemented, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida told Eurogamer.

"Once a game gets RAM we never give it back," he said. "It's not possible to retrofit something like that after the fact."

As revealed by Eurogamer yesterday, PS Vita, due out in Europe early next year, actually has more RAM than the PS3.

Vita has 512MB of RAM and 128MB of V-RAM, compared to the PS3's 256MB of system RAM and 256MB of video RAM. This enables features such as cross-game voice chat to run in the background while games are being played.

On the PS3, however, things are different.

"The game has to use its own memory to do [in-game voice chat]. There's always voice chat in the game. But it's a part of a game feature. It's not a part of an OS feature. That's the reason in terms of the ability to have voice chat across different games."

So, voice chat is better on Vita than PS3?

"We totally agree!" Yoshida replied.

RIP in peace, dreams of cross-game chat. :(

Could they not just have said this in the first place?

Does anyone actually care? I understand people might want feature parity with 360, but I've owned a 360 since launch and have used the cross game chat feature 3 maybe 4 times.

Personally no.

But then I don't care about voice chat in general when playing online so...

As Tom O'Connor used to say:

"Never a cross word".

Then he'd go off and do coke and shag prossies, but at least he never murdered anyone like Terry from Brookside.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

He's oversimplifying the reasons.

If they got the OS footprint down far enough, it'd work just fine. They got the XMB showing up in every game, and the text chat lobbies working in every game, without having to up the console's RAM. It's possible, but this confirms that it's so difficult and messy that Sony's just giving up.

It's in Vita because they planned it from day 1, not because it just has more RAM. They dropped the ball leaving it out of the original OS spec, and it's too late in the game to bother trying to pull a memory management miracle to add it in when they're starting to work on the new generation.

He wasn't exactly singing Sony's praises.

When I played more often on 360 I used it all the time to have conversations with friends playing different games, we would talk have a laugh and a few drinks made single player games more socialble and organising multiplayer games a doddle. I rememeber having some good chats with Fishy on here whilst playing an entirely different game for me its an essential feature I missed on PS3 and why I have always played less on it and more on 360.

It's cocktail time!. Then again when isn't it.

Console voice chat is absolutely awful. If you're remotely interested in actually talking to your friends while you play games - so much so that you need to be talking to them while you play different games*, I'd find a better solution.

*I don't understand this either. Last thing I want in my ear when I'm playing a game by myself is a friend's voice.

I usually chat to my friends when I'm on the 360 even when we're playing different games. It would be weird not having cross-game chat but I suppose it doesn't really matter if you only meet up to play the same game with your friends or just don't chat on your PS3.

No. It doesn't have a processor either. It's actually a little hamster on a wheel in there running for all he's worth. When he gets a bit tired a yellow light comes on.

I use it about three or four times a day if I'm on LIVE.

I can't imagine I'd ever use cross game chat :? I can understand having chat in games when you're playing with people (for working together, and I suppose for lolzing at n00bz), but if I want to talk to someone who isn't playing that game, I'll phone them. While I'm not playing a game.

How many people here actually use it on 360? I see CrystalGipsy and tomvek do. Anyone else?

I do. It's mostly just to organise games that we're about to play, or to discuss actual real world happenings. It's like using a phone, only free (so I suppose it's a bit like Skype, only through the Xbox).

See above. If you've got a lot of friends online and you're trying to organise games of whatever, or just fancy having your mates in a big chat, it's the best option. It's sorta vital when it comes to FIFA with so many dropped connections, glitches and crashes.
