The PS3 will never have cross-game voice chat. Here's why:

Anything to do with games at all.

I loved playing against random people from all over the world but cross-game chat stopped that almost completely :(

I think of a world in which Demon's Souls exists with in-game voice chat, and it makes me angry. It makes me want to mailbomb someone.

Hooray for the PS3!

Indeed. With voice chat, we'd never have these gems.

They should've just said it earlier. When Vita was announced with cross-game chat, and ex SCEE head Andrew House in an interview with C&VG said that clever tech guys were working on bringing cross-game chat to the PS3 I pretty much guessed that, and ruled out the silly idea that Microsoft had patented it. Maybe Sony will stop and think a little harder about important console features of the future when designing the PS4.

Dblock wrote:No one has even mic on ps3.

Exactly this. So few people people have mics. I rarely use mine because I hate talking to an empty room.

As for cross-game chat its good for a checklist of features but I don't use it, and I don't like it when others do to. If im playing CoD I don't want to be having a conversation about the weather with a mate who is playing Duke Nukem. I find it distracting and if you are playing a team game you can't communicate. I especially hate playing Halo and I'm teamed up with a group of teammates who are chatting to someone else.

Much better if Sony created a better party system. So you can easilly buddy up with your mates and jump with them from game to game.

So how much memory should a next-gen console have? Epic will ask for 2GB but I reckon 1GB minimum.

Surprised Sony didn't put in at launch then remove it later.

I rememeber having some good chats with Fishy on here whilst playing an entirely different game for me its an essential feature I missed on PS3 and why I have always played less on it and more on 360.

Good times.

I miss those chats. Still get on with suzz and sbk sometimes but less than I used to.

Personally I still can't understand the uproar. Not because of the usual responses I'd get from certain people in this community but because why would you want to talk to someone who's not in the same 'space' as you. It'd put me off what I'm doing, especially if I'm competing online.

As most will know I hate those god damn stupid headsets, I find them a nuisance. I always thought that games, to be enjoyed, need to be played as they had been designed rather than being interrupted by a sob story or a joke at a defining moment in gameplay. It wouldn't feel as immersive.

It's a shame it couldn't be in for those who can handle that but, in the whole scheme of things, is it that important?

I use cross game chat to talk with friends quite often, they're usually on Live in the evenings so I speak with them there rather than phoning them. I wouldn't do it when playing a story-driven game for the first time (if it's a story I care about of course), but most of the time that's not the case and it's nice to just sit back, relax and chat with a mate as I play.

Given that the PS3 is over 4 years old I think it was pretty unlikely that the PS3 was going to suddenly get cross game chat so it is good that Sony has finally put an end to the speculation. Interesting what it represents though - how unsociable and lonely gaming has become that you need to speak to someone else playing a different game at a different location for company....

Yes?

I think this subject demonstrates how unsociable some gamers have become if they can't comprehend why people would enjoy talking to each other when playing games or don't even want the option to use cross game chat - I don't feel forced to use voice chat by a feeling of desperate loneliness or guilt of being unsociable when gaming, I chat because it's fun.

I think this demonstrates how the videogame has lost focus. Consoles these days are more about connecting with others rather than the games themselves. Videogames have show over the years that if it doesn't have multi-player, for instance, it's not worth a purchase.

This is a subject that is not only affected by voice-chat functions but other things like custom in-game music, Achievements/Trophies and the breadth of entertainment features these consoles are starting to push out. It's all nonsense. More features keep creeping in to deter from what the entertainment format stands for.

I'd rate a solid game above all of those.

I'd rather chat to people who are in the same room as me, and they probably wouldn't like it if I stuck a headset on and ignored them.

Do you have an audience to entertain during every gaming session?

What utter nonsense :fp: I'm sure anyone here could produce a sizeable list to prove that statement wrong.

If I'm not playing a dialogue-heavy game, then I don't mind being in party chat on the 360 or Mumble on PC to chat about gooseberry fool.

Cross-game chat is very important to me, lets me catch up with mates, hell I even use it when playing PC/PS3 games.

I'd rather have the option to use it then not.

Now I don't have Gold, therefore can't use it, but the way I see it - cheaper than making a phone call.

I presume this works when watching Sky Player too? And who says you even have to be playing a game or even have the 360 visible on the TV? I've spoken to people on the phone while watching football for example. Same thing, really.

Cross-game voice chat is free I think, party chat is limited to Gold users.
