I'd usually describe the smell, but my nose is well strawberry floated, :D You do get a fantastic scent of lemons and Caramel though, usually.
It's got a really smooth and incredible sweet taste to it. The sweetness then flattens out and you get a really nice warmth and woodiness that lingers for ages on the tongue. It's a great Whisky, and I recommend everyone buy some :D

That description sounds divine. Can't wait to try it.

I think I'm going to have to try some of that as well. :o

What's it called? I got some Black Label earlier today. As I understood it, that was a step up from the Red Label, no?

You may be angering the Whisky snobs by saying that

The yanks are fairly hit and miss when it comes to Alchohol, mostly miss in my experiance with their Wines, Beers and Whisky.

There are a few nice Californian Wines out there so some of them can do stuff right.

That's very nice. I got a bottle for Christmas the year before last, and still have a few drams left, but I'm not sure how well it'll have held up. I have a bottle of Jura that's been open only five months, and it's already gone a bit eurgh. (It's also what triggered my physical breakdown and illness on Thursday morning!)

Conversely, I love Laphroaig, and it's my dad's favourite whisky. Excellent. Other peated whisky lovers will want to check these out:

Penderyn, a Welsh malt. There are two versions of this, 'ordinary' single malt and a peated variant. I haven't tried the 'ordinary' one but the peated variant is very nice. Subtle. Unfortunately I and dad finished the whole bottle in a weekend so I can't remember much else about it.

Caol Ila - a more traditional peated whisky. I haven't had any of this in over a year, so no details I'm afraid, but it still comes recommended.

Anny bagged a 14 or 15 year old one from somewhere, but dunno where he got it.
I've not seen it in any shops near me, so have to buy it online :(

16 year old. I had it bought for me, but I can find out where he got it.

Tranny blackout - that welsh one looks interesting and 'caol ila' v nice indeed

Personally I'll quite happily drink southern comfort - a nice if somewhat sweet liqueur - and jack daniels is an acceptable burbon - (excuse my spelling - I can't be arsed to get things right at this time of right). Lets try not to be too pretenscious about this !!

Do you guys drink it with or without ice? I'd like to expand my experiences of Whiskies, but it can be expensive, so I don't want to waste money on a rubbish bottle. Any recommendations for a reasonably priced, easily available one?

But that's like saying that mice are more like rats than sheep. They might look like rats, but they're mice.

I prefer SC to JD also. Don't let the fact that it's liqueur hinder your enjoyment of it.

In a double try one block of ice and no more; in a single just a drop of water and no more - otherwise neat.

Blended - try bnj.

Single malt - well thats a whole adventure ! - try a few to start with - an islay and a speyside should give you an inkling as to where, if anywhere your own tastes lie. Also try Michael Jackson's guides, (I kid you not), for reliable tasting notes

Remember - practice makes perfect !!

We are whisky connoisseurs damnit! There is no better time to be pretentious. Embrace it.

I have no time at all for Jack Daniels I'm afraid. Jim Beam on the other hand, is a very nice bourbon.

As for ice/no ice. It varies. I like to sample most whiskies straight first, and then on the rocks.

While I agree about SC (on occasion) I'm shocked that you consider JD 'acceptable'. What happened to standards sir! I would only ever drink JD with Coke, and even then grudgingly.

Lotus wrote:Do you guys drink it with or without ice?

Personally I drink whisky neat and without ice, but I know people who add a splash of water (usually carbonated) and/or occasionally have ice. I must say it can depend on the whisky. You can't realistically drink peated whisky mixed with anything else as it would be disgusting, but Yamazaki (as in the OP) can be drunk long, ie. mixed one part to five or six parts water.

Have you tried some of the more 'refined' bottles of jd ? Its not all as per asda you know - I was once allowed someone's 25 year old after he had died because his widow did not know who else would enjoy it.. - a bottle I really should have treated with more respect... - having said that then I will drink a couple or too of std. jd - but christ not with strawberry floating coke !! Absolutely nothing with coke - you'll be drinking your beer with blackcurrant next !

I have a good rule..

"There's no E in Whisky" (IE it's not spelt: Whiskey)

If it's got an E, avoid.
Spelt properly.. worth a punt.
