Felt more like an older series episode to me than a lot of the other newer ones, nice standalone silly ep - not up there with the very best but still decent and a good start to the series I thought.

Thought that first episode of XII was pretty shite in all honesty, we're talking "Krytie TV" levels of atrocity.

The characters seems to have completely lost all but the most surface elements of what made them who they were back in the original (88-93) run. Your telling me that Arnold Rimmer, a character who has frequently expressed his admiration and even adoration of the likes of Hitler and Napoleon in the past, would utter not a word to these characters on meeting some of these types?

I'd put things like Lister (a man who, lets remember, cannot play guitar) "jamming" with Hitler down as some of the worst things the show has produced in its near 30 year history - up there with The Cat dancing with blue midgets and that dinosaur shite in S8.

The humour has become so base and lowest common denominator it's really quite depressing to watch. It's a shame because of the last couple series there have been some good moments and episodes, but this certainly isn't one of them.

Listers jamming was a bit of an issue for me as lime you said, in the past he's previously only thought he could play guitar but actually been terrible at it. But at the same time, that scene did make me laugh so it's hard to be too bothered by it, continuity errors or not.

I don't think this series or any other is likely to ever match the best of the early ones but it's nice to see some new ones regardless.

I thought it was pretty good. I tend to watch the show in a vacuum now rather than comparing it to past glories. A lot more enjoyable that way.

Same with me, focusing on past episodes makes me sad. I rather enjoy the Dave series for what they are. I for one enjoyed it, never took itself seriously and got a few laughs

There is something inherently wrong about Lister being able to actually play guitar well.

It could have been a funny scene if Hitler had been great but Lister was crap, with Hitler being overly complimentary due to being cured of evil.

Dunno, I liked the duo. The song wouldn’t have been right if he had been rubbish. Maybe if it was a dream sequence

I've been watching through this on Netflix and I kinda feel like it hasn't aged very well so far. Maybe a sacrilegious statement.

Although, I would say that Season 3 has improved somewhat.

Yeah jay was obvious. Lister can’t play the guitar again.

Was okay but preferred the first episode

The latest one is the one I saw recorded.

Some good lines ("...rarer than an un-groped bottom at the BBC...") but let's face it, another underwhelming storyline. We are 3 million years away from the likes of Back To Reality, Backwards, Better Than Life etc and I don't really know what the excuse is that is leaving us with these paper thin plots.

Having said that, I have definitely enjoyed the series so far, especially the 2nd and 3rd episodes. They would have to sink to unfathomably poor depths of quality for me to turn against the programme! Irrational fanboy and proud of it :toot:.

Watched episode 4 lastnight, I think it's my fave of the series so far. Felt like an early series episode, one of those that doesn't rely on fancy costumes/aliens/sets just an interesting premise on the ship with some funny jokes.

Thought the episode was the most consistently funny of the series so far and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves again and be properly back in character.

Without spoiling who, there's even a brilliant cameo from an old character. Looking forward to the last two episodes now, just hope they're as good as or better than this one.

Good lord Season 7 of the show is hard to get through. I think I might bail out, I don't remember 8 being much better.

The lack of Rimmer really hurts it. He's the best part of this show.

Yeah 7 has a few funny moments but they were few and far between. Series 8 was marginally better but still far from great.

The show then hit it's biggest low point with the Dave 3 parter "Back To Earth" saved only by the novelty of seeing the characters back in action.

Thankfully series 10 onwards marked a big jump in quality and got better still with series 11 and 12.. it's still a bit hit and miss but I'd say at worst the new episodes are ok at their best they're brilliant again, maybe not quite upto the absolute best earlier episodes but getting close.

I think.losong one of the writers combined with trying to use a bigger budget hurt series 7 and 8, Rimmer going in Series 7 too just made the issues worse.

Back to earth is think.was just a victim of big ideas mixed with low budget, I think the while premise was just a money saving exercise but it could have been done so much better. Other old earth based episodes like "backwards" were probably lower budget still but worked amazingly.

For me Trojan from Series X is one of the best Red Dwarf episodes full stop. Its one of the most laugh out loud episodes there is.

I really enjoyed the 'feel' of Series XI, and there were some really good bits in it, but probably no episodes as good as X. This series is kinda feeling similar for me.
