That's not entirely accurate. He quit because he was busy with The Brittas Empire. By that point he actually got on with Craig Charles, whom he despised in the earlier years.

Kryten made an appearance in earlier series then disappeared after insulting Rimmer.

Then he's a full fledge member of the crew and yet can't insult Rimmer properly like he did before. Is there an explaination for this?

And the return of Holly!

Lister: Holly, we need your advice, mate. We've been cornered by a T-Rex that was formerly a sparrow, and the only thing that can turn it back into Woody Woodpecker is in its stomach. What's your take on the situation?
Holly: What do you want? The long or the short version?
Lister: Long.
Holly: You're finished.
[pause]
The Cat: What's the short version?
Holly: Bye.

Oh God yes, how did I forget Holly? Can still remember the joy that came over me when he first popped up with "Whats happening dudes?" at the end of series 7

Ok cool, didn't know that.

I spent one summer a while back watching through all 8 series with the commentaries. They're absolutely fantastic and mainly consist of the cast catching up with each other and claiming they can't remember anything about filming the series. It is obvious though that Charles and Barrie still don't get on. The best series of commentaries is the one where Craig is absent; Barrie is allowed to shine (as opposed to being borderling bullied by Charles in the others) and even fills in for his absent castmate with a Lister impression.

It's explained in a fast-forward Star Wars text crawl at the start of series 3 I think. Fake EDIT: Wikipedia to the rescue:

A very fast scrolling text at the beginning of the third series (a parody of the Star Wars opening crawl[8]) explains that Kryten smashed the space-bike into an asteroid. Lister found Kryten's remains and had to rebuild him from scratch, and so was unable to recreate him exactly.

I think the hate for Series 7 and 8 is too strong at times. 'Duct Soup' and 'Ouroboros' from Series 7 are two of my favourite ever episodes. I would say 'Krytie TV' is the worst ever though. Close between that and 'Bodyswap'.

IIRC, one of the books suggests that Kryten took off on Lister's bike and got flattened by an Asteroid. He's retrieved though and Lister puts him back together (badly).

The physical look was easy, it was the internals he really messed up, crosswiring Krytens guilt chip with one of his CPU accelerator boards.

(The original Kryten "look" can be considered a side effect of the complete lack of budget the show had  )

I honestly can't remember, though a few posts back Taf suggests that it's actually from the scrolling text from the start of that season.

Honestly, I've read so many of the books and seen so many of the episodes (and smegups) that the whole thing is just a kind of generic Red Dwarf mish-mash in my head :)

If you're a fan of Red Dwarf and you've not read the books, you've been remiss in your duties  They'll often take scenes that were parts of episodes and elongate them, or let you see what certain characters are actually thinking.

Memorable for the scene in which Kryten "inconspicuously" runs backwards at 30mph while wearing a yellow cagoule IIRC.

That's the kind of thing I mean about the books. I've never "seen" that scene, but I can picture it (and hear the character voices) perfectly.

Also I like the episode "Gunmen of the Apocalypse".

It won an international Emmy award if I remembered correctly.

In the book they expand it because they spend several years there. He ends up having sex with a mountain girl.

Never understood the hate for 7 and 8 myself. I'd put them on par with the first few. The middle years are the best ones.

I did this by severing my real arms and replacing them with super-human cyborg arms.
