PostThe Retro Links Thread
by Pattybean » Sun Jun 14, 2009 12:23 pm

I thought it might be useful to create a handy thread with some interesting retro-centric websites for those of you who, like me, enjoy reminiscing about the old days in the form of articles, YouTube videos or sprite art. So, I'll post my retro themed bookmarks, and if anyone has any they feel should be added just post them in the thread and I'll edit them into this post.

I'll split them into categories and try to add a description so that it isn't just a bunch of URL's too.

Note: After consulting with admin, ROM sites and MP3 download sites are a no-go, so I won't be adding any to this first post.

General Retro Sites
Hardcore Gaming 101 - a broad collection of retro articles on game series', individual games, and other oddities. Lots of nice pictures too.
Nintendo Life's Retro Section - lots of retro related news and reviews.
Nintendo Life's Virtual Console Section - news, reviews, videos and screens of all Virtual Console releases for every region.
The Video Game Museum - does what it says on the tin. Game endings galleries are pretty handy for jogging the memory.
1UP's Retro Gaming Blog - a variety of retro centric blog posts on various topics.
racketboy - a comprehensive retro resource for games and systems.
Retro Gamer Forum - the official forum of Retro Gamer magazine.

System Specific Sites
NES Guide - a comprehensive collection of videos of pretty much all English NES games. Handy for finding out about a forgotten game or just browsing.
SNES Guide - same idea as NES guide, albeit not quite as comprehensive currently.
N64 Guide - same idea as NES guide, but currently pretty bare bones in terms of content.
World of Spectrum - everything Spectrum.
Lemon64.com - everything Commodore 64.
Playstation Museum - as the name suggests.
Sega Saturn UK - everything Saturn.
Playstation Collecting comprehensive database of PS titles.
Assembler Games Dedicated site for collecting ultra video game items (panasonic M2 anyone?!)
RetroBright Reverse the discoloration process that happens with console plastic
Console Passion Retro console mod specialists, if you have a old console that you want region free or RGB conversion these are the guys to see.

Video Game Music Related Sites
The Music of Video Games - a YouTube channel which takes an individual game and posts a video with an overview/sample of the soundtrack.

Graphics Relates Sites
The Spriters Resource - a collection of ripped sprites from a range of games/systems.
VideoGameSprites.net - the same idea as Spriters Resource, but Square RPG centric. Individual sprites are separate files unlike most of those on The Spriters Resource.
Sprites INC - Megaman Sprite Site.
VGMaps.com - 'The Video Game Atlas' - has sprite rips of the maps from a range of games and systems.

I have taken over the update of this thread so will be updated regularly now.

:)

Great idea. I'm sure you'll be fine linking to soundtrack sites though, I know I've posted links to some on here before and lots of others post links to music or television shows in various threads without complaint.

One of my favourites is VGTunes, managed to get the 1080° Snowboarding and Ocarina of Time soundtracks on there. They also have the absolutely immense Perfect Dark OST which I'd recommend to everybody.

Check out my YouTube channel!

I actually wasn't aware of it when I picked out this username  (it's a Tokyo Police Club lyric fragment), but have since heard it. It is a rather good tune so happily I didn't accidentally name myself after a bad song.

Actually, that's a cheap plug for my own site. I was going to post a new topic in the Retro Gaming catagory but the forum hasn't given me the option to post a new topic. Anyway I don't suppose a moderator could help me please? Is there the possibility of sponsoring with either a title banner or a 'sticky' thead perhaps, with a small advert for my company? I've been looking to advertise with several game magazines which came to no avail as future publishing's rates are out of my budget and imagine publishing, who publish retro gamer (and play which 'used' to be a favorite of mine!) decided I wasn't good enough to even respond to. I've advertised with facebook so far and after some google searches, thought to try advertising with a few sites and forums to get me started.

I hope someone can help, and please check out my facebook page if you get the chance.

Kindest thanks, Rick - Rep1ay Retro Video Game Events.
