I really should just boot the game up
A Rivals week runs from Thursday 8PM out time - until early Wednesday morning (something like 3am here). Wednesday is a day off.
Each week there is a theme.
3 songs are selected as "spotlight songs" and the team can put in scores for each of the 3 songs across the 4 instruments. The teams total spotlight score are those 12 scores added together at the end of a week. These scores can be done on any difficulty, obviously high difficulties = more notes so in theory more points, however a streak is just as important so sometimes it's possible to get a higher score on a lower difficulty than you could on a difficulty above.
If Player A's score is higher than Player B's score then their score is replaced with the higher score (your team can only submit the highest score for each instrument/song combination)
This weeks 3 spotlight songs are above (Go Your Own Way, Cold Clear Night, Freewill) and will have a spotlight icon beside them in your library.
You can play the songs in any mode, quickplay, online quickplay, I imagine even career counts although i've never tried personally.
There is also a mode on the main menu called Rivals which makes things a bit easier. It's quickplay again but it filters your library down to the Rivals weekly theme so playing songs is a bit quicker. You can also get your teams stats, the individual player stats as well as the weekly league leaderboards.
The team can also score "Rivals XP" which contributes to our weekly score. You can earn this XP by simply playing songs on any instrument/difficulty. Your score doesn't matter, although you do get more XP the better you do. So simply participating by playing a few songs can help the team even if you play badly. These songs change week to week based on the theme. Soemtimes your library might have 50 songs that can earn XP that week and other weeks it could be hundreds of songs. It really depends on your library. These songs have an "R" beside them, or you can get the filtered list by heading to Rivals and then pressing either "Orange" on instruments or "RB" on vocals. Spotlight scores will also earn this XP as well as their spotlight score.
The more times a song is played then the XP from it gets diminished. The team also gets a bonus for the 1st 3 times a particular song is played. So you can play it first and you'll get a "1st play" bonus. If I play it next I will only get a "2nd play" bonus, unless I play it on a different instrument to you in which case I'll also get a "1st play" bonus as long as no one else in our team has played that song on that particular instrument that week.
It sounds complicated but it's actually pretty straight forward.
There is also a Rock Band companion app on iOS and Android which lets you send messages in the team groupchat, see your music library (which you can filter through) and scores as well as the leaderboards for that week.
