AN EARLY LOOK AT UPCOMING CHANGES TO RIVALS MODE
It’s been a little while since we’ve drawn the curtain back to give you an idea of what we’re working on behind the scenes.
We’ve got a bunch of fun stuff to talk about for the next update, and we’re kicking it off by revealing some major improvements to something that many of you are enjoying every week.

Rivals Mode has been a great way to play with old friends (and make new ones) in Rock Band. Today, more songs are played in Rivals mode than any other and each week the level of competition kicks up a notch as crews compete to climb the ranks and reach Bloodstone. Today, we’re psyched to introduce you to Rivals Seasons – recurring collections of challenges with unique rewards and a handful of major changes to the way the Rivals system works.

Each season, your Crew will compete to get as far as you can over the course of an 8-week season. At the end of that season, rewards will be doled out based on what tier you end on, as well as where you stack up in that tier (being at the top of Bloodstone will offer better rewards than just being in the tier!). Every season will start with every crew in Bronze, for a level playing field. With Rivals Seasons, we want to switch focus to the thrill of promotion, rather than the fear of demotion. So, no more demotion. We’re also changing the percentages for promotion each tier to balance the lack of demotion.

This is a major change, and we’re bringing this to you early partly so we can gather feedback to potentially tweak some mechanics. After all, the goal is to make Rivals Mode as much fun as it can be for as many players as possible.

For the transition between current Rivals Mode and seasons, we’re considering every challenge from the launch of Rivals in October through this update as part of “Season 0.” To reward you for your hard work in Season 0, we’re going to introduce some sweet gear for your characters to wear based on which tier your Crew finishes in. If you’ve been on the cusp of getting into Diamond or Bloodstone, there’s no time like the present to rally your crew together and make a final push before the first Season begins and these rewards disappear forever! (Shameless plug: have you tried the Rock Band Companion App yet? It’s a great way to chat with your Crew and keep them motivated.)

With these changes it’s pretty important that we keep a level playing field, so let’s talk exploits. The next update is going to be addressing the following exploits that previously allowed people to achieve higher-than-should-be-possible scores:
  • Calibration settings affecting sustains
  • Calibration settings affecting drum fill timing
  • Pause rollback extending vocal overdrive

We’re also adjusting how pausing over notes works so it will no longer remove notes on guitar/bass (Behavior will go back to how it was before the patch that changed this behavior). This will continue to remove notes on drums, although it will now break your combo if you pause directly on top of a note (Not if you pause during a break between notes).

With these exploits fixed, some leaderboard scores will be unattainable and thus impossible to beat. We’ve got a few options and are really looking for feedback on how to approach this leaderboard integrity issue (knowing full well that everyone will feel differently about this):

1) We don’t touch the leaderboard. The current leaderboards remain as they are, and all new scores will be posted without exploits, knowing that some songs will have unbeatable scores.

2) We target only the very top entries on each song’s leaderboard and, rather than wipe them out, we lower those scores to a “safe” non-exploited value. This ensures that all leaderboard scores can be beaten without exploits after the patch, and the full combo laurels, percentage, and stars for these records will remain. This approach will only affect a small number of players, and all scores other than the very highest will be unchanged. The number of records targeted may vary per song, based on our projections of the exploited scores for that song.

3) We do a full wipe, and the leaderboards are cleared for everyone.

We’re genuinely interested in your thoughts on each of the above, as well as any options we might have been missing. Unfortunately, “just wipe the exploited scores” isn’t really an option as there’s no way to identify if a now-higher-than-possible score was attained maliciously or not.

Phew, that’s a big info dump. Take some time, mull it over, and let us know what you think! We’re committed to keeping Rock Band fun and exciting, but also fair and rewarding without cheaters gumming up the works for all the people playing legitimately.

We’ll be back with more info on upcoming content soon. In the meantime, let us know what you think!

Special content rewards. Does anyone want them? I'm not all too bothered but I am happy to grind out some promotions if people do want them but are also prepared to chip in. We are currently in the Gold teir and have only ever reached the one above that (Platinum)

More customisation is always a good thing but most of their special outfits have been dreadful. If they bought back the anime buns hairstyle as a reward I'd be playing it 24/7, though.

I imagine it'll be the same things for everyone, but then in addition to the vanilla version you get a coloured version based on the tier you end up in, so gold items for gold tier etc

PDP adapter is in stock on their website but they only deliver to US, Canada and Mexico

http://pdp.com/en/afterglow/rock-bandtm ... cy-adapter

Keep an eye out on Amazon US whenever you can because if it's anything like last time they'll pop up on there in the very near future and they ship to the UK

This'll probably be your last chance to grab one, so look in to US postal forwarding addresses etc in case Amazon don't stock it

Good luck!

Thanks BID0  They've been utterly useless communicating what's actually happening with that adapter. Harmonix in general just seem to be totally oblivious to any of the criticisms being levelled at them.

Case in point: This week's Spotlight songs are *all* DLC (Green Day/Manson/Soundgarden :dread: ) Would love to see the exponential drop off of interest in Rivals as they keep pulling this trick. No-one's going to even bother trying if they don't have the spotlight songs to put in a decent score. How are they finding this so difficult? Stop letting your fuckwit community members do your job for you.

Yeh this week's truly awful. Apparently there are over 1,000 songs as part of the weekly "theme" too :fp: luckily I have the Green Day export and also the Manson song which came free for Rivals pre-orders, so leave me to do the spotlights on those two that should easily see us up top this week as others won't bother playing 8-) I am pretty sure I don't have the Soundgarden song, I only have a couple of theirs, I find them pretty hit and miss

3 of the 4 announced songs for me this month :datass:

Got a feeling MGMT will not be proper masters though otherwise we would have got that back in RB3

I'll probably watch the Rock Band twitch stream tonight because they'll probably show off the new update. I'll report back here if anything good gets shown

I just realised it's Tuesday so it's the last day before we get relegated :slol: maybe the last week before it all changes too. My Xbox wants to do an update but it fails, so hopefully I can get online soon to put scores down on the spotlights.

I got us past mid table but didn't have time to play for XP.

That Green Day song on spotlight was like playing an entire album :dread:

Yeh it was quite fun and worth so many points! I think I scored over a million just on bass, guitar and vocals. They were quite good spotlight picks actually, I never had soundgarden but if it's anything like the other two...

I'm not sure what happened on twitch last night. They played this weeks DLC...

And then they played a test song which had a bunch of letters spelt out on the note highways (I didn't get to see what they spelt out). Then one of the community team got electrocuted. When power was restored he was stuck inside the video wall screen for the duration of the stream, while "Dr German" tried to get him out. In the end he was left inside so I don't know if this is going to be continued in next weeks stream or it's leading to a reveal for something or I just smoked something stronger than I realised last night.

Goddamn just noticed that this week's Rocksmith DLC is a "Mix Tape Song Pack". Moonage Daydream, Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Hooked On a Feeling, Come and Get Your Love and Go All the Way :datass:

So Rock Band do a tie-in for Archer and Mass Effect, but don't think to try and capitalise on the biggest music-driven hollywood blockbuster since the first Guardians of the Galaxy... Have Harmonix run out of money for licenses now or are they all just a bit dim? Or is the insistence on "master" tracks for accurately letting you know when you're not actually playing limiting their options a little too much?

I can't imagine the licenses for Ed Sheeran being all that cheap but I don't really get the intricaties of music management...

Just logged my best score on Foreplay/LongTime though! Finally managed to nail the drum rolls in the intro section. Still can't keep the combo going on the long runs of yellow or blue though.

It's probably a case of all the usable songs for Rock Band we already have.

They have relaxed the rules on the quality of the music stems they use in the last 12 months or so (an the vocal minority are up in arms with it  )

That's allowed us to get songs that Harmonix tried to get back in RB3 like Danger Zone and the Toto singles we have had.

While the rules have been relaxed (instruments don't need to be separated), they do still need the original recordings to work with. It's a little more complicated than that, but that's the jist of it. It's not as simple as Rocksmith who just need an MP3 file that you play along to, which also makes getting permission a little more difficult to, which also makes licencing more expensive.

Think the legacy adapter might be intermittently back in stock online over the next few days. Just from PDP, Amazon are still useless :fp:

From the looks of it they're making it in small batches and just sold out of the recent one. They've confirmed they're making a new batch which should be available end of next month

Maybe some will end up on eBay...

This weeks DLC:

YOUR MISSIONS, SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT THEM...
Image

A few weeks ago, we shared some news about the next Rock Band 4 update in the form of Rivals Seasons, major changes to the way Rivals Mode works. If you haven’t checked that out, you can read it in a previous blog entry. . It’s worth a read, whether you’re in a Crew competing every week or haven’t dipped your toes into Rivals Mode yet. (Seriously, there are limited-time Rock Shop rewards at stake, check it out before it’s too late!)

We’ve also said that Rivals Seasons isn’t the only headline feature coming in the next update, so feast your eyes on (drumroll please)… Missions!

Image

The new Missions system will take you through every mode Rock Band 4 has to offer, presenting you with a wide variety of objectives across different instruments, difficulties, songs, and more. Completing Missions give you badges (which are being combined with the existing Rivals Mode badges) that you can view in a collection or even show off to friends in Online Quickplay. You might be required to get at least three Unison Bonuses in each of 10 different songs, or hit 250 notes in Overdrive in a single song, or get Gold Stars on a handful of devil tier songs. Those participating in Rivals Mode will be able to accomplish even more, because some Missions are only available to Crews. On top of this, if you haven’t made the jump to Rock Band Rivals yet, there will be some Missions available to everyone who owns Rock Band 4.

Going into the Missions Screen will show all Missions available to you. Each Mission will give you a set number of Mission Points when completed (along with a nifty badge), and additional missions are locked and hidden until you pass varying Mission Points thresholds. Some Missions will refresh weekly with Rivals Challenges (Like having your Crew fill every instrument on every Spotlight Song with a 5-star score), others will be included with the update. Future Missions will be delivered via server updates, so we’ll be able to send more goals your way without the need to patch the game.

Image

You might find yourself completing a Mission or two through regular gameplay, but if you want to specifically tackle a Mission that’s focused on specific songs, you can select that Mission and it’ll take you to your library, pre-filtered to only the applicable songs.

It goes without saying that some Missions take real chops to complete. You always view your badge collection in the Completed Missions tab…

Image

…or if you’re feeling particularly proud, you can even show off your favorite badge in your Online Quickplay introduction!

Image

A host of Missions for you to tackle will be included with Rivals Seasons in the upcoming Rock Band 4 update, landing in the coming weeks. Keep an eye on our channels for other goodies that’ll be included in the patch, additional news about Rivals Seasons, and more!
