I have all three spotlights so I'll put in scores for any spots not scored by Tuesday, so don't feel like you have to buy any DLC unless it's something you really want immediately. Should be another easy week for us as I can't imagine many groups will have all 3 songs which will put us at an advantage.

I'll be terrible this week, then! Does the season pass entitle you to *both* DLC tunes if they're both in the spotlight?

Just one a week (8 songs over 8 weeks). This is the first time 2 brand new DLC songs feature, I can't imagine it's going to be a regular occurrence (apparently each song needs to be cleared through the rights holders to be featured as a spotlight?! and more obviously to be included in the spotlight season pass as it's basically a bundle of songs and some artists/labels will not want to be bundled and help promote other artists). I imagine something like Whitney Houston was meant to be part of the spotlight season pass but they couldn't clear it at the last minute and so Vanilla Ice (vocal virtuoso?!) was thrown in as a spotlight song to cover the problem with not having a spotlight season pass track in the 3 spotlight songs)

Rival's Challenge - Season 2: Week 3

twitter.com/RockBand/status/905581424526360577

Spotlights:
  • Rick Derringer - Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo (Rock Band 4 disc song)
  • Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby (this weeks DLC, also free for owners of the "Season 2 Spotlight Pass")
  • Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me) (this weeks DLC)

Play weekly themed songs on vocals to earn an XP bonus. Weekly themed songs likely to be high/devil tiered ratings on vocals (at a guess).

DLC 07/09/2017: Hot and Cold
We’re coming up on fall here in Boston, and to fit the mood, we’ve got a song with a slight chill and a song to warm you up.

While not initially a single, “Ice Ice Baby” quickly became Vanilla Ice’s most popular song. It has the distinct honor of being the first hip-hop single to ever top the Billboard Hot 100, all fueled by a disc jockey playing “Ice Ice Baby” off the B-side of the single. From there, the song spread quickly as To The Extreme sold 15 million copies worldwide while holding the #1 spot of the Billboard 200 for 16 weeks. It’s the perfect party song, with a well-known bassline and perfect harmonies, so get your friends together and have them sing along.

“I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” is the Grammy-winning Whitney Houston hit from her second album Whitney. The first of four consecutive #1 singles from the album, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” was her biggest hit in the US for the next five years, while topping the charts in over a dozen other countries as well. A perennial ‘80s dance-pop song, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” is already great for parties, but it’s also tons of fun to play. Funky guitar mixes in with synth for variety throughout the song, while bass plays a tougher keyboard part. The drums bounce around various disco beats, even having a solo, ranking the song in-game as tough on drums as it is on vocals. Vocals, to no one’s surprise, are a monster. The lead has a ton of range, filled with improv and some runs. The last chorus has a key change, so make sure you’re ready for that.

Songs can be purchased individually for £1.59 each. The Rock Band Rivals Season 2 Spotlight Pass can be purchased for £10.79.

  • Vanilla Ice - "Ice Ice Baby" (Part of the Rock Band Rivals Season 2 Spotlight Pass)
  • Whitney Houston - "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)"

I'm just going to put this out there, and if you hate it then cool - I actually like that Whitney Houston tune.

same! Probably would have put it in my wishlist till I had a party. I had a go of it last night and it's actually quite easy considering the difficulty tier it's place in. I think it might be more down to the melody being so well known though.

The Vanilla Ice track is just a joke though  it's all talkies so a vocal song doesn't get any easier than that. There was definitely something that happened last minute to cause Vanilla Ice to be a spotlight song. If any one does get it, play it in brutal mode as you'll get even more XP than in any of the other modes.

Do we have a list of September songs yet BID0? The National have a new album out today and it's a shocking oversight that they're not in the game already - would be really good to see a National pack with a new song and a couple of classics.

I'd have the Vanilla Ice down as a 0 blob and the Whitney Houston as a four blob tier track - what are they actually?

I haven't seen anything on the September DLC still :( they don't always announce it all at the beginning of the month, it seems random. Sometimes they do it week by week, sometimes they announce half and keep half as a surprise too. Although I think it's a PAX event this week/weekend and they're getting that dropmix card game out the door which may have delayed any announcements. Perhaps we will get the full list for September next week...

As for tiers, Vanilla Ice was 0 tiered on vocals (and everything actually I think) and I think Whitney Houston was 5 on vox

Nice one buff! When you got us in to the top 70% on XP that's when we hit the promotion zone, so that must be the cut off this week. I'll do the spotlights over the next few days.

Did Vanilla Ice on Brutal mode - the other two songs are a bit niggly to get 100% on but I'm hoping to have a couple of hours with the game on Tuesday morning to go for it.

Rival's Challenge - Season 2: Week 4

twitter.com/RockBand/status/908118125614387201

Spotlights:
  • Avenged Sevenfold - God Damn (this weeks DLC, also free for owners of the "Season 2 Spotlight Pass")
  • The Dead Weather - No Hassle Night (DLC, July 14th 2009. Single also included in the "The Dead Weather Pack 01" pack)
  • Duck & Cover - Knock Em Down (Rock Band 4 disc song)

Play weekly themed songs on drums to earn an XP bonus. Weekly themed songs likely to be high/devil tiered ratings on drums (at a guess).

DLC 14/09/2017: Suspect Singles
If you’re looking for a challenge, we’ve got you covered this week, with two songs that aren’t easy to play on anything.

Avenged Sevenfold has tons of frequent flier miles with Rock Band. From early DLC to this latest release (and plenty in between, like the Rock Band 4 disc soundtrack!), the band has plenty of huge songs that play well. “God Damn” is the latest single off of The Stage, becoming a Top 10 hit on the Mainstream Rock Songs chart earlier this year. Like “The Stage” before it, “God Damn” is a tough song from start to finish. Vocals feature some deceptive notes scattered throughout, which just may trip you up. Guitar AND bass have constant 16th triplets, though guitar gets a break to do a small solo. The solo isn’t as tough as other Avenged Sevenfold songs, so you should use it as a quick breather. The drums have a beast of a chart, seeing triplet kicks and changing disco beats.

The Who are the epitome of a perfect Rock Band band, which is why “Won’t Get Fooled Again” was the finale of the original Rock Band’s Endless Setlist. Famously using a programmed synthesizer as the spine of the song, it grew into the epic closer of Who’s Next, while also ending most live shows. Hailed as one of the greatest songs of all time, it refuses to be anything less than an icon of rock. Every part is a highlight in The Who songs, so you can pick up anything and have a great time. John Entwistle has some of the most fun basslines you will find in Rock Band, while Pete Townshend made a number of enduring guitar riffs over their career. The scream in “Won’t Get Fooled Again” is one of Roger Daltrey’s strongest, so you need to make sure you’re ready for it. Last, but nowhere near least, is what many consider to be Keith Moon’s best drum performance. The story goes that, while synchronized with the synth line, the entire drum part is a single-take freestyle from Keith.

Songs can be purchased individually for £1.59 each. The Rock Band Rivals Season 2 Spotlight Pass can be purchased for £10.79.

  • Avenged Sevenfold - "God Damn" (Part of the Rock Band Rivals Season 2 Spotlight Pass)
  • The Who - "Won't Get Fooled Again" (Rewind: Rock Band 1 tracklist)

Would rather they stuck Won't Get Fooled Again into the Spotlight rather than some terrible old DLC. Wish they'd kick this habit, it just isn't fun.

I love The Dead Weather. But Avenged Sevenfold is awful and I've actually paid for it with the spotlight pass :fp: I already have about 7 of their songs too many in my library :dread:

I'll have a listen to the Dead Weather again because I can't remember the track, but Avenged Sevenfold's recent stuff has been awful. I think I'll have to help out with XP this week rather than the spotlight scores (but our new drummer seems pretty good for those anyway!). Will spend the week playing Foreplay/Long Time and the various Who tracks :shifty:

Their first album is best. They're made up from Jack White (White Stripes), Alison Mosshart  (The Kills), Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age) and Jack Lawrence (Raconteurs). So if you like any of those bands then you should like them. They also did a pretty good cover of Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric?".

I have all 3 songs this week so I'll put in some (not great) spotlight scores for any of the parts. I should have some game time this week for XP too. We don't have to worry about playing with the big teams either as we completely failed last week and they've all moved above us :datass:

I've just realised that these themed weeks are named after achievements from the first Rock Band (Lord of the Strings, Virtuoso and AN-I-MAL!!!) which means Bass will be left out :slol: :slol: :slol: as that didn't have an achievement. I still need to finish Lord of the Strings to finish the first game, I feel a lot better on guitar the past few months thanks to this Rivals mode so hopefully I can scrape through the last 2-3 songs I need to do on the first game.

Gonna hopefully get a fair chunk of my xp contribution done tonight. I'm also debating doing the relevant songs on bass, but on hard. Gotta try and move up difficulties somehow.
