\m/

So, I think it's about time we had a thread for everything Metal and Rock related, with everything it covers. I know there's quite a few of us who listen to it on here and it seems discussion on it often just get lost in the overall music thread, so why have a little break off eh?

I'll kick it off with one of the tracks from my favourite album of 2012...

Don't know if you would class it as rock but I've been listening to a lot of Hell is for Heroes lately

You know, I've never actually listened to Tool. Shall give that one a listen...

For those of you who lean towards Stoner Rock/Doomy type stuff, you can do worse than Black Moth who released their debut. Started listening to it this week, it's pretty funky.

I'm getting into High on Fire.

Bear with the slightly boring drum intro and the song will kick your ass (starts at about 30 secs).

That's pretty kick-ass. I even like the drum solo bit.

The whole album is like that. Also, De Vermis mysteriis is a book invented by Lovecraft.

Also since I'm at it, great opportunity to post this recording again. It's the bassist of High on Fire playing with a kick ass drummer. Quality is crap. Also the song is long and sounds like more of a jam in places but still worth a listen...

For me it's got to the point where "metal" feels more regurgitated than X Factor. Too many bands seemed to give up invention for the sake of distorted street cred and it was the same minor key bollocks. How long and hard can we hit it? Can we sound like a thousand other bands? Good, stick it on a record.
I think whatever you listen to has to be melodic. If you're listening to hours of atonal shredding as a matter of choice, you're either a pretentious arsehole or everyone hates you.

Gave Black Moth a good listen and it just feels a bit....meh? Sorry, Ritual. Considering all the bands that have come before them, back to Budgie or Sabbath or whoever, it feels really basic and straightforward.

Anyway, this song taught me a lot and shaped my outlook on music growing up.

Each to their own I suppose. As for whether everything feels regurgitated and whatnot, honestly...I have no idea. I still feel there's enough good quality stuff out there and that there's bound to be a lot of middle of the road stuff just because these days there's more music out there, if that makes any sense. Dawn of the internet and all that.

I like Baroness' Blue Album but every time I hear it I think how much better it would be if they had the drummer from Mastodon.

Oh, I won't give up! I don't mean to come across all that sour  If anything I'm hoping this thread might turn me onto stuff I haven't heard before.
Metal has obviously evolved but most bands in the 1970s had a funk and rhythm to them underneath the drone, it seems to be far less frequent nowdays. I'm a blues fan, so that plays a part, but you're right in that it's just a case of finding what I like as it's probably still out there.

What do you think of High on Fire? Also check out Naked City, you might like them (start with the self titled album). No promises though...

They seem like...decent musicians but not my thing. This sounds a bit dickish, which it's not meant to, but I got over people screaming and growling when I was 14. I mean, I get it. I used to spend a lot of time with guys in Death Metal bands and some that were goregrind fanatics and I actually quite someone like Gorefest. But HoF is closer to what I mean about regurgitation. So many bands do that. I realise it's like mentioning Kiss to a Zeppelin fan, but the likes of Pantera and Slipknot were the perfect meld for me and they didn't become a one-trick act. There seemed to be a craft to it rather than "monkey see, monkey do".

Christ, I sound harsh  I'm genuinely not trying to have a go at anyone's tastes.

Edit: Are Naked City the "jazzcore" group?
