Chaps, I found my PS2 recently and am thinking of getting a PS memory card and a few Playstation RPGs to either play again or play for the first time. I'm thinking of:

FF Anthology
FFVI
FFVII
FFVIII
FFIX
Alundra
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Vagrant Story

Assuming I can get my hands on those. Any other recommendations? PS or PS2.

EDIT: seems the Chrono games didn't get a PAL release..?

If you want to play Chrono Trigger, it's on the Wii Virtual Console. Apparently the PS version is a bad port anyway.

Not an expert on PS / PS2 RPGs but Vagrant Story is a great game with superb design. Going for £10 - £15 on eBay as well.

Right, I am probably going to start one of my backlog of handheld RPGS. But which one?

My options are Persona 4, Bravely Default and Final Fantasy 7.

GR can decide.

From what I've played, Final Fantasy VII is the weakest of that bunch. So Sykes is good to suggest it, otherwise you may end up disappointed by it after the other two.

Well, to be fair to FF7, it is much, much older than the other two games. They would be considered failures if they hadn't improved on that game in some way, what FF7 being at least 15 years older.

Still, I do wonder if a lot of people rate FF7 as one of the best games ever due to it being the first proper JRPG, and at the point in their lives when they played it (around 11/12 years old, so not a young child but not quite a young adult either). It is the same with me and Ocarina of Time, as I played that when I was 11 and I had never played a Zelda game. At that point, it was by far the biggest, richest, most-in depth and complex game I had ever played.

Persona 4 is definitely the one to go for if you're in Japan, though Bravely Default is meant to be good too (haven't played it). They should both have sequels next year, so it would be a good time to play them.

I imagine you'd be slightly disappointed with FF7 if you played it now for the first time, as it will have aged a lot more than the others and you won't have any nostalgia for it. We've had polls on here before and most people picked their first Final Fantasy as their favourite. I started FF7 for the first time about five years ago and thought it was alright, but it didn't blow my socks off, whereas the others have more than a decade of refinements and improvements over it.

You also might like Final Fantasy X HD or some of the Japanese visual novels like 999, Virtue's Last Reward or the Danganronpa games. The latter two visual novels have Japanese voices if that's something you're after.

You are probably right. It is one of my favourite games ever, and it was probably the first RPG game I ever played. I had never experienced anything like it. A fantasy story with dystopian/steampunk/sci-fi elements? Goddamn. I need that game in my life again. Still have the disc copy, but I have nothing to play it on.

FF7 (if it's your first time) should still be very good. The combat and story hold up well, you'll just have to accept older graphics.

Speaking of FF - FFIV is on Steam - what's the general impressions, especially for someone who rates VI and VII as the high points?

I started FF7 in the end. I did actually try and play it during my second year at Uni, when a friend brought his PSOne up, but didn't stick with it. I didn't get very far - just after the second reactor bit (which is where I am at now).

It would be quite a good game to get a GRplayde for, though I am not sure if we could run a busy, successful one of those anymore. It would also require some staying power, given the game's length.

Like Fantasy Life, it was released at the worst possible time. It should have been pushed to February or late January. I'm intrigued by both but neither will get a look in from me until next year.
