It would have to be Captive from the ST/Amiga days. For a Dungeon Master clone it had a massive amount of depth from the sheer number of dungeons to the amount of upgrades and weapons for your robots. There might be an element of rose coloured specs but it's probably one of my favourite games of all time.

I've just started playing Alundra. Seems good so far, although I'm having controller issues which is hampering my enjoyment and progress. I'm playing on the PS2 with a PS2 controller, but I always seem to get one of two problems; the menu keeps popping up at random times without me pressing anything, or, the triangle and circle buttons don't work, meaning I can't use items. I don't know whether it's the controller or a compatibility issue between Alundra and the PS2, but it sucks either way.

Started playing Tactics Ogre: Let's cling together at the weekend and despite playing loads of SRPG's found the battle system extremely confusing, the main thing being seemingly unable to issue commands to anyone but the main character, is there an option to switch to 'manual' control as I'm finding it a bit boring watching the game practically play itself.

The release date of alundra was in 1997... same year the Dualshock made it's appearance. It could be one of those early games that needs the Dualshock switched off.

It's also worth noting that Alundra has two versions, so it may be that the later release has fixed Dualshock support, and Lotus has the earlier release of the game.

That doesn't sound right, might just be in the opening level where they are specific npcs.

Thanks for the comments on Alundra folks, turns out it was the controller. Seemed to be on the blink and was a bit hit or miss, but then I tried it on a PS2 game and it doesn't work at all now. Time for a replacement.

You're right, it was just on the opening level, there's still a couple of NPCs in my party but reading between the lines of what little story I've seen I've a feeling they'll soon either leave or get killed off.

Game seems quite difficult too, which is fine by me.

I've been playing FFIX this weekend, I finished it a while ago but I wanted to go back and learn the skills I was missing (mostly with characters I rarely use) and defeat Ozma. After dozens of failed attempts he/she/it is finally dead, I didn't think it could be done as the battle seems to be based purely on luck but here I stand victorious :D

It's getting really hard to keep up with all these indie RPGs. Loving the visuals, and the combat looks very Chrono Trigger-like. Definitely one I'll be looking forward to hitting PSN.

Just a heads up that Tales of Versperia and Eternal Sonata are both going cheap on XBLA at the moment (less than £5 each). :datass:

There's a lovely list of nested articles looking from RPGamer looking at upcoming RPGs this year that's well worth a read. It's also an insane amount of quality and quantity. Some of them aren't due for release here by the year's end, but of the ones that are, I intend to get:

Tales of Zestiria (PS4)
The Legends of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel (Vita)
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC (PSP; hopefully Vita compatable at launch)
Fallout 4 (PS4)
Xenoblade Chronicles X (WiiU)
Yo-Kai Watch (3DS)
The Legend of Legacy (3DS)
Cosmic Star Heroine (PS4)

I'll pick up Persona 5 when it eventually releases here.

Restarted Tactics Ogre after realising I'd been upgrading my units wrongly, kept forgetting to swap skills when changing weapon type/class.

Still having trouble with the Ninja/Kunoichi class, can't figure out why their Ninjustsu magic does so little damage compared to the cpu controlled Ninjas of the same level (mine does about 3dmg at lvl 11, theirs do around 36dmg at lvl 11). Having similar trouble with Rune Fencers/Valkyries too.

Tri-Ace bringing back those Valkyrie Profile vibes. I was mixed on the art style when I first saw screens, but it's grown on me in motion.

Looking forward to the PC version of The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC although I've yet to finish the 1st part so there's no rush.

I thought the PSP version came out a few years ago.

Finally got around to playing Pier Solar. I was going to wait for the Vita port, but actually I'm really glad I decided to run through it on the PS4. It looks gorgeous. The mix of shiny HD and old school sprites on a massive screen is a joy. It makes me crave for HD remasters of many an old JRPG. I love the range of features too, being able to alter the random battle encounter rates (you can even set it to zero!). The first dungeon was really easy, and I was slightly apprehensive the whole game would be a walk, but thankfully the difficulty really spikes up from the second major area onwards.

Pier Solar down. I'm a little bit sad at the lack of love the game gets, but it is infuriatingly old fashioned in its design at times, and I can see that putting a lot of people off. The dungeon designs can be confusing and getting your bearings difficult with the frequency of random battles (however, you can lower the rate; even to zero). There are also points you need to be at specific places at specific times that aren't really well instructed. The difficulty spikes can be brutal, especially if you miss the items that reduce specific elemental damage, or miss certain skill books (a really handy one gives every character 1 gather at the start of battle (x1.5 damage and healing for every character). But I thoroughly enjoyed it, the characters, the story. I detested those slippery block sections. Horrific.

I'll not be playing anything RPG related until Tales Of Zestiria in October. I'm still conflicted about whether to keep my LE pre-order. At double the cost of the normal edition, it's hard to justify. I do really want the OVA though, and the figures are cute. I notice there's a guide coming out too, bit expensive though. :(
