After Nintendo took a month to patch in inverting the y-axis in Mario 3D All-Stars it got me wondering: do others find games unplayable without it too?

No. I think I used to but then I stopped that nonsense.

Depends on the game, mainly only for flight controls, otherwise no.

Yes. Couldn't play it non-inverted.

Yes, because the stick isn’t moving up and down. It’s moving forwards and backwards. When I tilt my head backwards, I look up, and that’s how I want my sticks to behave. And I resent that being called “inverted”. It should be called “realistic”, with the alternative being “simpleton”.

Sometimes. Poll needs a 3rd option

I always love this "logic". Obviously explains why when you move the stick left or right the in game player leans left and right as they are clearly tilting their head rather than turning...

Invert both x and y. The screen is a pivot point.

Playing the tutorial in Gears 5 last night and it asked me to look up. Pulled back on the stick and it set it all up. No drama. That's how all games should be.

I always invert. If a game doesn't offer the option to have inverted vertical controls I can't play it. Luigi's Mansion is guilty of this and I spend 90% of the time gusting the floor. It's infuriating and it should always be an option.

Yep, always saw it as 'pulling my head back to look up' since my early FPS days in 1998 on PC, so have done it since.

Obviously there's no right or wrong way, but inverting is the right way.

I usually adapt to whatever is the default for the game, unless I'm switching between games and need it to be consistent. It's better this way for when you come up against a game that won't let you change it

Yeah, this is the ideal - have it handled in-game (same with Halo, I think). Failing that, always include an option. It’s rare that there’s no choice, but it still happens (Fall Guys at launch). I don’t know about the other consoles, but Xbox at least lets you configure the controller to reverse the input, so that’s always a fall-back.

I think inverting is more prevalent among us oldies who grew up with Kempston Pros and Quickshot IIs.
