That is what gives it the superb atmosphere, filling it full of dodgy foilage is not a great idea.

It kind of ruins the whole point of the series and the FALLOUT SPOILER GECK and eden if the whole place is covered in trees

But the art style was shonky. Right from the start I could see I wasn't going to like it. It just didn't look right. You want bleak, dystopian stylings - how about GoW's masterful take on it? Or Half-Life 2's? Fallout 3's world looks inadequate, in comparison. It could have been great, but they just didn't have artists up to the job of creating it.

IMO.

I see your point but my take on it was (and I may have got the wrong end of the stick here) was that in those games the world was still worth fighting for whilst in Fallout is seemed so futile as there was basically nothing left worth saving anyway.

Thinking about it, Fallout 3, married to the visuals of a game like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. would have been a winner in my book. Imagine that. I'm sure I could have warmed to the game if had looked as impressive. You know me, Rik - I live for the eye candy, right?

The only RPGs I think I'ved played are Fable II, the Paper Mario/Mario and Luigi games, and the various editions of Pokemon. This thread makes me want to play more though.

I like the appeal of RPGs, like the stories, settings and exploration. But I really don't like or see the appeal in turn-based battles. The exception to the rule being Pokémon, which I've always enjoyed.

Zelda/Fable style games I love. Someone make a list of games that are along that sort of line.

Edit - Oh I played a Mario and Luigi game on GBA once. It wasn't that bad. Until I kept getting killed by higher leveled enemies so quit playing. ¬_¬

You should try the DS one. Funny story, and great battle system, even coming from a man who doesn't normally like turn-based.

Try Kingdom Hearts. Sure it may be not everyone's cup of tea but...

Everyone owes themselves to try it out. It may be confusing to attack and juggle menus at the same time but you'll work out a system.

TRY IT!

A much more serious version of Fable would be The Witcher. Not quite Zelda-esque, but the closest thing I can think of without the game being so kiddy.

I dont like the look of Fallout3 either. Something's not quite right about it, it doesn't feel like you're in a post apocolyptic environment. Oblivion is a much better game IMO.

I can't get into Fable2 either folks. Its boring the hell out of me. :shifty:

*whispers* that's because Fable 2 is gooseberry fool. Again a nice technical achievement but the gameplay seems to be stuck on automatic for almost everything.

Valkyria Chronicles
Quest for Glory V 8-)
Fallout 3
Deus Ex    (often considered to be my favourite game of all time)
Pokemon Red and Gold 8-)
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X-2 :|
Final Fantasy XII

Off the top of my head I think that's it. Although I have started Final Fantasy VII and Chrono Trigger but I'm not making much progress. After finishing Valkyria Chronicles I really want to play Skies of Arcadia, but I'm not sure what's the best way of doing it.

lolz

But really, after playing Fable 1, Fable 2 felt like a retread of Fable 1 with automatic gameplay. If you've never played Fable 1, then yeah I guess Fable 2 must be fun, but I liked the more free-form nature of the first game. It was more fluid in combat, especially since there wasn't any automatic lock on when going into melee combat unless you wanted to hold down a button.

For all the things Fable 2 improved on, it just made the game more boring. It's by no means a GTA4 dullfest, but if you've played the first one, the second one is just a bit dull. I didn't like the world map either, I thought Fable 1 had a much better world than Fable 2.

One of the wrongest things I've ever seen written on these fair boards (outside of his own "shonky" "political" threads). Compared to the incredibly bland Gears of War Fallout is a retro nsteampunk dystopian masterpiece.

Actually, compared to pretty much everything Fallout 3 is a retro steampunk dystopian masterpiece.

Actually, they're very much at opposite ends of the same scale. Gears of War is ruined splendour, Fallout is ruined sci-fi 1950 utopia with a healthy dose of "real world".

The thing that makes Fallout work is the continuous 1950's style upbeat attitude you're exposed to while exploring the wasteland that resulted. Probably the best place to properly encounter this mishmash of attitude is while you're in the simulator.

What about the DC Ruins? They're surely the epitome of ruined splendor, and it's done with a whole lot more character than Gears.
