Still pushing distance. Managed 7k in about 45 minutes. I might actually be able to do 10k :o not in an hour like but everything in time.

I've had a few weeks off, due to holiday and laziness.

Decided my 7yr old running shoes were due for an upgrade so I used my 50% discount at Sweatshop (health insurance perk) to get a pair of Brooks Ghost 10. The difference compared to my old Mizuno Inspire 7 is incredible. They are so bouncy and comfortable :)

Probably due a new pair after 7 years! I don't tend to get more than 500-600 miles out of a normal road pair until they lose their bounce although I have switched to Hoka's predominantly now and get up to 1000 miles per pair in those.

On a personal note. Finished the Canal Slam events which involved the Grand Union Canal Race (145 mile run from Birmingham to London) at the end of May. The Kennet & Avon Canal Race (145 mile run from Bristol to London) at the end of July and last weekend finished the Liverpool to Leeds Canal Race (130 mile run from Liverpool to Leeds). The last race was undoubtedly my best ever ultra performance finishing joint 1st in a time of 22hrs 24mins.

It was also my 100th marathon or ultra race event so pretty much a dream result for me.

Is the 145 mile run done in one go? I can't even imagine running for an entire 22hrs 24mins in one stretch.

Avon, out of interest, what is your lifestyle? The dedication to something like this must be immense, impressive but immense.

You also get a million more repsect points for saying miles and not kilometres to make it sound like more

Desperately need to do some speed work to mix up my long slow runs, short slow recovery runs and medium paced medium runs.

Haven't ever really done any before though. Any tips?

Something like 400metres as fast as I can and then however long it takes, use that as recovery time and repeat under I drop?

strawberry float that's amazing Avon.

I'm currently training for a half marathon, ran 18k on Saturday and spent the rest of the day as a zombie.

Pan, personally I'd say 400m is a bit long for the sprint part. I normally aim for about 15 seconds. I try to make it so I can increase it steadily so for example:

Week 1: 5 sprints of 15 seconds
Week 2: 5 sprints of 18 seconds
Week 3: 5 sprints of 21 seconds
Week 4: 6 sprints of 15 seconds

And repeat.

What half marathons are you looking at TNAG?

Had around four weeks off on holiday and came back with 13 days before the New Forest Half. Did a hilly 8 miler on Monday to get myself back into it a bit. New Forest on the 10th, Winchester on the 24th then the Great South again in October :) then I'll concentrate on other gym bits for a while I think.

Manchester, in October. It's fairly close so should be easy enough to get to. It'll be my first one. 4 weeks off then two weeks of training? You like to make thing easy for yourself don't you?

No point making things easy ;) I know my base fitness after the past couple of years is being able to run 9 or 10 miles reasonably comfortably so I just do a little top up for a few weeks before a half. A month abroad made this more difficult though. It's hard to motivate yourself to run abroad the morning after you've been drinking wine and eating cheese every night  Let us know what Manchester is like!

Probably the most middle class sign off to a post I've ever seen there with the wine and cheese chat.

Pan, I used to have a circuit that ended with a 200m sprint round a track - push ups, sit ups, crunches, planks, side planks(60s), step ups, bicycle movement with the legs box jumps and something else I can't remember the name of, all x30followed by a 200m hard sprint. After three circuits would come a 400m sprint. It was designed to help 800m sprinters and my mate was almost at commonwealth qualification pace after adding that to his training. Worth thinking about?

The Severn bridge run is quite nice for a lunch time. 4.5 mile round trip and easily extended to 6 is say if I go that bit further.

This.

I actually don't get it - if I'm going out for a long run, I want it to sound less. The idea that the GNR is 21km is horrifying. 13miles I can handle.

I assume the km bummers are running in miles then converting it for bragging purposes.
