I figured it just goes off the GPS on your phone?

Sorry, should have been clearer, I meant the website Spinny linked to earlier.

Lol well that makes more sense. :D

Well I think I have the bug. A mate of mine wants to transition into training for 10K with me but I think I prefer running solo with my tunes on. Might give it a go though he's more experienced and would probably do better at pacing. Looking at my splits I always peak on that first kilometer.

I love getting it out of the way on a weekend morning too. I can play splatoon til 3am and not feel like I've wasted my day now.

I can see sub 22 being doable within a few weeks but after that I expect gains are going to be much slower.
I also need to find some faster routes. My current one has a fence to climb over and a busy roundabout to cross.

This week's parkrun was 21:58, a new PB and just scraped into sub-22 :toot:

I've moved house and so it was a much flatter, faster and just plain better course. Two laps instead of the three at my old parkrun, and the second lap is actually shorter than the first which gives me a bit of a boost to know that I don't have as far second time round.

I think I pushed slightly too hard at the start, and could knock another 20s off next week just by pacing myself better.

They just updated it with a new one which looks more accurate

The winning time was only 21:01 which shows how tough the course is. I might try a flatter course next week and go for sub 25.

The broken 'First unread post' thing sent me back to April on this thread, so I saw this top post, and then the second one on this page.

:toot: and, indeed :toot:

That's an amazing improvement in the space of a few months, mate, even allowing for your notes about the course changing. Good work.

I'm starting to get into fighting shape now, too. Just did my fastest ever loop from the office at lunch (it's 2.4mi). I had been feeling a bit slow, so did some fast hills at the weekend and it's given me some of my swagger back. I ran at 6mins49s per mile, and feel pretty good again.

(As an aside, I've been wrestling with depression for a number of reasons for the past few years, and running again, while not sorting all of my issues, has made me feel a lot better. Kicking myself for not doing it sooner. I need to keep booking myself onto events/races, though, as without a target, I just stop doing it.)

Aw man it started pissing down mid run today so my shirt stuck to me, which led to chafing and a bleeding nip :dread: that was a pretty miserable work out

Vaseline helps. Not with the recovery, but with prevention if you use some during the run.

I'm hoping it was just heavy rain making the shirt heavy

I thought I replied to this a couple days ago but it seems it didn't post. Anyhow, thanks very much!

I started running back in Feb and couldn't do a mile without walking. After a few weeks I was able to run a 30 minute 5k, and now today I knocked 19s off my PB to get a 21:39 5k :)

Sounds like you're already at a good pace, just need to stick with it and reap the rewards. For me the main health benefit has been than I now sleep better, and that in turn helps in many other ways.

I would love to try and get faster, but at the moment I'm working on distance since I'm progressing from 10k being my usual challenge to my first half marathon. Was meant to go for a 12k run today but remembered part of my route wrong so did 14k. Certainly felt longer, but I'm not too bad afterwards. Still got 2.5 months to go anyway.

I do agree with running helping with depression. Even if it's just being too tired to deal with the existential dread.

Managed 5k on the route with several up and down hills in 30 mins today, the last time I got close to that was on flat ground so I'm taking that as a pb.

Maybe that's it :slol:

I dunno, I generally feel better about everything. I guess I've done massive amounts of sport all my life since the age of about 8, and the past couple of years have probably been my least active since I could walk, and have been my toughest in terms of my mental state.

There's almost certainly a correlation there

Spent the past couple weeks running hilly areas. Up to now my PB for 5K was 30:08. Switched back from the hills to the flatlands at the river and did it in 27:43. \o/ Best thing is I still felt like I had plenty left in the tank. I think I will alternate the hilly route and the flat routes going forward. I love seeing improvements.

That's great progress, it's such a buzz when you can feel yourself improving like that. And welcome to the cool club 8-)

You'll probably find that increasing your distance improves your 5k time as well.

Ran my first official, non-parkrun 5k race yesterday evening. Chip time 19:11 and Strava tells me that I ran my fastest-ever kilometre and mile in the process. :toot:

Thanks. It's crazy how weather affects you too. The past few weeks have either been torrential downpours or blistering hot. Today was just mild and great, perfect conditions.

I did pacing at parkrun today. Took the 23 minute spot and managed to get round in 22:42. Really enjoyed it, nice change from trying to go as fast as possible.

Done another 6miles today. It's such a hilly loop, some bits are seriously tough. I wasn't amazingly quick, but managed not to stop (even after the killer hill) and my form was good.

GNR is five weeks tomorrow and I think I'm in ok shape. Just need to keep my knees and hips from disintegrating and I should be fine.

Edit: my dream of going sub 1hr30 isn't happening, but should be on to beat my previous best of 1hr39:25.

Damn, I ran 15k today and that took me 1hr30, can't imagine doing a half marathon in that time right now.

I think I need new compression shorts, mine are chaffing between my legs on these longer runs. Very uncomfortable. Any recommendations? Also, it seems my left foot is a little bigger than my right since I'm getting a blister on one of it's toes. :x
