Goto a sports shop / running shop that do gait tests (free). I was surprised at the knowledge of the DW sports employees in my town. Let them know youve got £60 to spend and they should be helpful. Usually the sales assistants are runners themselves, If theyre not - walk out of the store. I usually go for Asics, but theyre all much of a muchness really.

Got some new balance ones which cost £60, never had a single blister or sore feet from using them.

So I just went on my first run in a long time. I go to the gym and do use the bike/rowing machines and consider myself fairly healthy, but after 10/15 mind I had a tight chest whenever I took a deep breath? Bit concerned, is there anything obvious that it could be?

Think I've had the tight chest feeling before, but not so quickly.

The run was in a park which did have quite a lot of dust/pollen and is quite windy today (in the S of France 8-) )so would that have had an impact?

Feel fine now, a little bit tired, but has anyone had this before or any ideas of what it could be?

Even if you use machines in a gym, it can be hard to replicate exactly how strawberry floating knackering an outdoor run can be. Yes, pollen, pollutants can exacerbate that as well.

As you just said 'tight' and not 'stabbing', I think you're ok, you just need to build back up to proper running fitness again.

My chest is always tight for the first few runs when I'm unfit.

Ah cool, that's good to hear.

I've never really managed a long period of regular running since the start of secondary school. But moving to a flat with a park near by so will have more time to go running and maybe see if there is a park run there.

Did a google of it and it ranged from pollen/air temperature to a heart attack :lol:

Sounds like rabies.

Did the 4 miles again, both of us weren't really feeling it and it felt like the run was taking forever, yet we matched my personal best time :|

One day I'm going to be full of beans and smash that strawberry floating time :datass:

Had a work colleague over from the U.S. and he does 6 miles in 32 mins :dread:

Just broke my record for the 4 miles, knocking 2 minutes and 10 seconds off my best. Utterly dead at the end, so so tired.

There was a Daily Mash piece the other day urging runners never to try anything that's actually fun. 'If they can get addicted to something as hideous as running, they'd have no chance with heroin...'

I run 2 miles 2-3 times a week, and I find that stunningly boring. I don't know how people can do half marathons or full marathons. :dread: Even with music it's dull as strawberry float.

Exactly, it's so strawberry floating dull I don't know how people can love it to the point of actually doing it out of choice in their spare time! I run on a beautiful country lane too so I've got it good compared to city folk.
It is a good excuse to have a natter though, and today my colleague raced some cows so that provided some amusement.

But to quote back to the future 3, "run for fuuun?! What the hell kinda fun is that?!"

Still, it gets rid of the belly so needs must!

I'm thinking of adding another running day to my week, so that would be 3 days in a row taking it to 12 miles a week, up from 3.5 at the start of the year. I figure doing a fast one Tuesday, then a chatty easier pace Wednesday followed by another fast on Thursday should aid in the belly shift.

Guy usually run with is on holiday so rather than go on my own, I persuaded a guy who's pretty physically fit to come along. Last time we ran together we were pretty even, but this time it really showed what doing this regularly does for your stamina. He was so knackered all the time, kept stopping to walk so I had to zig zag in the road to keep some movement going. I'm the end when we got back he was purple in the face but I was so far below my normal pace that I didn't feel like I'd done anything, my heart wasn't even beating noticeably faster. Kind of a waste of a session really as I doubt I got anything out of that.

Did my first half marathon yesterday in Edinburgh, finished in 2:15:20. :toot:

I put in an estimate of 2:40 in January when I signed up and was aiming for 2:20 so I'm pretty pleased! I found it a bit tough from about the 10 mile mark but enjoyed the experience of an organised run overall. Could barely move today for ages. :slol:

Finally finding my running mojo again. Did a hilly three miles yesterday and felt great, then blasted a 1.7mi at lunch today. Getting started is always the hardest part. Can't let this momentum go.

This'll be the last thing you want to hear, but the sooner you can get out for another run, the better. That said, the first time I did a half marathon I couldn't walk for three days and didn't run again for six months :lol:

Haha I'll definitely go out next week, might do a 10k or something. Cheers, yeah I did like it. I've not even done a park run or anything before so the whole experience of running in a race was entirely new. Gave some kids high fives, waved at the well wishers, took some jelly babies from strangers, all good. Decided to bolt the last 0.1 miles but had to slow down just before the end as I genuinely thought I might pass out. Seems a bit mad that I think I'd like to do it again. :dread:
