I'm slowly increasing the distance of my runs and was able to do 6 miles on Sunday. Only 10 weeks to go until my ultra though so it's going to be really tough, but at least with the knee better it's not impossible anymore.

This reminds me! I should probably see a physio. Was doing a 15-mile run in Sweden last year (August!) and my form dropped for the last couple of miles. Felt okay afterwards I think but soon enough I had pretty bad pain on the lateral aspect of my knee.

Had to walk straight-legged for a couple of weeks and run a Tough Mudder straight-legged which is something awkward to behold let me tell you.

I've tried to rest it from running since, and stretch it and so on. Then I started doing trial runs every couple of weeks but couldn't ever get to more than 1K without the pain going back. Recently I managed a couple of miles or so but the pain was back again by the end and the next day.

It's now been 6-months?! Conclusion: I should probably get it checked out :s As much as I enjoy my gym sessions and cycling, running is my staple and I miss it.

What sort of exercises were you given? Lunges/movements strengthening stabilising muscles?

My issues are a tight ITBand, muscles on inside of leg were weak and firing late pulling my knee off centre, and my hamstrings are too dominant at expense of other muscles.

The main two exercises for me to get started are quarter squats while squeezing a towel between knees, and the other is lying on back with knees bent and feet pointed up then lift bum up.
I've got a few other stretches to do, and some foam rolling, I also had my knee taped up, and next week he's gonna give me a proper core routine.

Okay, so I did that half marathon back in November. Had no problems, took the first half easy and ramped the speed up in the second. My time was a little slower than I wanted due to maybe going too slow at first (heard it was a hilly middle third so didn't want to blow out after 10km). But I had no problems, never stopped and was generally comfortable, despite never going above 12-13km in training.

I have another half-marathon booked up in April and need to start training again.

The problem is, after the first one, my left knee ached a little bit. It sort of went away a bit, but it's been sort-of-aching again recently. Almost three months after the race. After the race, I ran 6-7km three times but stopped in December and January due to the cold weather and going back home for Christmas. The knee actually started aching a bit after the long haul flight back. It had ached after the race and the post-race runs, but had been alright.

It's still aching a little bit. It's definitely not pain, more of a very slight niggle. I can sort of "feel" a bit of an ache there sometimes. Not all the time, and it's not constantly on my mind or bothering me. I don't know either if it's affected by the fact it's really cold here this winter, or on days where I'm on my feet. I don't know what causes it or how frequently it aches, as like I said, it's not constant and it's not painful.

I was going to run on Sunday to begin the training - probably just 3-5km - but I'm worried that running might cause more damage. In the UK I would maybe go to the doctors, but over here I wonder if I can both adequately describe the feeling and understand whatever is said back to me. I don't want to end up going to hospital or getting x-rays and stuff because of the language barrier.

Is it normal to still have a slight ache? Would doing some stretches alleviate it? Will it be affected negatively or positively if I run again? I put it down as runners' knee at first, given I was pounding the pavement for 2 hours, and that left knee has ached a few times after particularly long runs, but it's always faded after a day or two. It faded after the race itself but came back. I worry that because I'd only go as far as 12-13km before, my knee wasnt ready for the distance/time increase on half-marathon day and I've strawberry floated something up.

I've not been active at all since those few post-race runs at the end of November. In fact, December and January involved a lot of travel and Festive excess, so I've probably been less active than usual and eaten/drunk more than usual.

Will stretching and light exercise help? I don't really want to test it out running as I have a feeling it will be fine on the run itself, but ache again the day after.

Did 10.74 km in an hour, so my pace was 5:35 per kilometre.

I'm not the best person to answer, but I think in general stretching is good and if your knee begins to hurt you shouldn't run through it. But long-term it's best to get a specialist to take a look as they'll be able to tell the exact cause.

Nice one!

Did my first parkrun in two months today. It was ankle deep mud, so not very fast, but it felt good to be running hard again after weeks of injury and gentle runs.
Gonna try and do a slow 10k tomorrow...

I did a half marathon yesterday. I hadn't trained and came straight off a night shift and it was incredibly windy. So I'm really pleased with myself that I finished it.

I may try and do another one later in the year and actually do the odd longer distance run rather the 5k i normally stick to.

Great effort! I can remember doing my first half and being amazed at how I felt, when you start putting the bigger distances in it really is more to do with psychology than anything else.

parkrun in the snow today. Interesting experience, won’t be a time threatening my PB!

Same. The two closest parkruns were cancelled so had to go a bit further out. It was a fun race and hard work but I was never going to beat my PB from the one time I raced there before. Was only a minute slower though, so not too bad.

I started running seriously last year, went from nothing to running 12.5 miles in 6 months, 2 weeks before my first half marathon I did one of those fun obstacle course mud run things and badly injured myself. What an idiot.

Anyway I recovered and when I came back from Australia in December after I had recovered I picked up a new injury where my knee stiffens when I run so I have been doing physio, been told I can start running again but bald cold and snow has delayed that, hope to start again next week with small one mile runs and building up from there.

So frustrating being injured I hate it.

I feel you. Been out since September with knee issues. Physio didn't have the desired effect so waiting for a scan referral now. It sucks balls.

That's pretty much the same story as me. Started running last January. Did too much and picked up some injuries. Recovered and then worked my way back up to half marathon distance, but after running that four consecutive weeks I knackered my knee in November. I rested it most of December but it didn't get any better so had to have physio this January.

Was really frustrating, especially as I had a race booked in April that then seemed like I would miss, but physio did wonders for me. It showed me the importance of doing stretches/strength training at least once a week. I'm already almost back to doing half marathon distance again, and feeling much stronger. April race is back on!

I was meant to be doing Cambridge half tomorrow but it's a complete no go.

That sucks, but you'll be back in no time!

Normally if you get injured you can defer entry until next year, or get a partial refund, however I think it's too late for that. However I did see this:

If you are unable to make the event on Sunday due to weather conditions we are offering a guaranteed place at an early bird price for the 2019 Saucony Cambridge Half Marathon.

Please email cambridge@osbevents.com before midnight on March 3, 2018, confirming your 2018 race number

Obviously it's just gone 3rd Mar but might be worth a try.
