off road running shoes: what should i be looking for? i've been running in slop recently and my nike road running shoes are coping ok, but i'm sure i'd be better suited to a proper pair of kippers that are capable of grass, mud, rape, gravel, other loose terrain.

A pair of decent cross-trainers should do you fine, they cost around £35-£40 but they'll last you a long time.

Just completed the 2010 Thames Trot run yesterday, a 50 mile run from Oxford to Henley.

http://gobeyondultra.co.uk/events/ultra_thames_trot

Managed to finish under 10 hours which I was pleased with and thanks to some foot preparation and waterproof socks blisters were minimal. Legs feel store and stiff today and somehow my back feels like it has been rubbed raw from carrying a pack all day (this never usually bothers me).

Next event for me is the Reading Half Marathon in March.

Just ran about 3 miles (will work it out properly later) without stopping. First time I've done that I think :D Chuffed. Wasn't even a struggle, just kept going, kept talking to my mate to keep me distracted and before I knew it I was done.

I wasn't aware you needed special shoes for rape.

I'll start running again as soon as Apple/Nike put make the + App available on my iPhone 3G - the iPod Touch has it, the 3Gs has it, why is it not on the bloody 3G?!

Ergh, dying. Just did the Cardiff Love 10km run... in a time of 49.06 (I'm no long distance runner).

Want to lie down now...

Congrats :D

Anyone got any headphones they can recommend for running? My currents are just In-Ear ones that don't last ten seconds of jogging.

Ta.

I use these (I don't remember paying that much for them... certain I didn't actually, but you can get cheap ones in that style - much better at staying in place): http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0009YB1SC/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

I use these and recommend them for reasonable sound quality being so durable in all conditions (i.e. wet/wind)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-PMX8 ... 329&sr=8-2

I have the older green style model.

On the running front, my recovery week after my 50m trot is over and I've been out a few times this week. Just done a 10m run and have another one planned tomorrow morning. Looking to step up the mileage going forward and do a 20m every sunday as I prepare for the GUCR in May.

Hmmmnn, thread seems to be running out of legs.

Doing the Reading Half Marathon tomorrow, distance wise this presents no problem as I've been running 10/20 miles on Saturdays/Sundays for the past couple of weeks but I know my overall pace is going to be pretty sloe. Predicting a finish in just under 2 hrs.

I recommend the Runkeeper application for the iPhone. Works really well but drains your battery life quickly if you're doing a longer run and listening to music.

Just over 6 weeks to go until the Grand Union Canal Race.

Did anyone see the Dispatches report on the London Marathon and how it's, ahem. run? Seems strawberry floating dodgy.

Basically charities, being charities tend to be very open about where their money goes (makes sense, huh?) but the London Marathon plc (or whatever they're called) are so vague about it, which is weird as they the LM is the most high profile charity event in the country. Last year they made about £22m or something, with about £4m in costs (I can't remember the exact figures)... Basically it seems like they make huge profits for their stakeholders which is obviously wrong.

There was a lot more in the program but the conclusion for me is that the whole thing stinks.

Edit - the other thing is a guy who sits behind me at work is running it in a few weeks. :fp:

Even if it is dodgy (and I haven't seen this programme), it is undeniable that it does an awful amount of good.

I've signed up for the Cardiff Half marathon in October. Better get training...

I went for a fantastic run on Easter Sunday - had a massive lunch and then waited 5 hours before going out. I basically did my normal 5k then found I still had loads of energy, so I just kept going did a pretty big hill as well. It sounds obvious, but it's amazing what difference eating loads (but having time to digest it) can make to your endurance.

Where do you run in Cardiff? Probably ran past you at some point.

Oh no, I'm no runner apart from one or two 5/10k runs in Bute park. I've been cajoled into the half by my house mate and sister.

But when I get training,it'll be around Roath/Cathays area, can't be arsed going all the way to Bute park.

Been running little distances, just over a mile in order to work my body into this a little more. I made the mistake last time I started running to do 5k all the time, which meant I lost confidence when I had to stop. I can do 5k pretty well now if I keep myself distracted, talking to my running partner seems to help a lot, same affect music has I suppose.

Pretty big worry is the state of my feet. The muscle between my heel and toes has started to feel odd since I started, as if it's shrunk, meaning I can't really bend my toes properly when I walk. I get sharp stabbing pains mainly down the inside of my foot, which means I have to walk on the outside of my foot which doesn't seem healthy. If I massage the muscle (could just be tissue for all I know) it feels like pressing to hard will bring on cramp. Any ideas what this is?
