Knee isn't quite back to where it should be and still aches a bit. Managing to run 40k on it per week at the moment though (4 x 10k with a Wednesday 50 min cycle time trial to break up the week) and ran it in 50:47 this morning. Should be back down under 50 minutes soon hopefully. So good to be running again.

Good stuff!

I've had an aching hip all this week, hoping it's nothing serious and goes away soon as I've got my 60k race next Saturday!

Hopefully the warmup will loosen it up! 50:22 today - heading back in the right direction after a long enforced hiatus :)

How long are your training runs out of interest, Sat?

I tend to run between 6-10 miles 2 or 3 times in the week, then a 5k parkrun on Saturday, then a long run on Sunday.
The long run was increasing each week, I've got up to 20 miles with my backpack fully loaded. Last weekend was supposed to be my last big effort with the aim of running 25miles but I was aching from a hilly parkrun and cut it short at just 8 miles to try and avoid injury.

I feel like I've done the minimum to (hopefully) get through this race, but I had a knee injury in Dec/Jan that put me back quite a bit. Should be much more confident going into the next one...

Just recently finished the Get Running app course, which I think is a sort of couch to 5k thing. Now what do I do now I don't have an app telling me?

That depends on where you want to get to! Running a similar distance but faster or running longer distances?

I don't know, I suppose 10k would be a good distance to get to and improve speeds. Also probably need some proper running shoes

I think there's a plan called 'Bridge to 10k' for people who have finished 5k and want to go further.

Proper running shoes make all the difference. Go to a running shop and try on lots of different pairs, you want whichever is most comfortable.
Once you know what shoes you like you can save some money by buying last year's model, usually they are half the price with no major differences year to year.

Definitely agreed re: the shoes. Can’t quite describe the difference it makes.

10k in 49:36 Just now. First time sub-50 for about a year thanks to injuries and only about 30 seconds off my PB. Did it after a 12 minute stair climb and before a cycle cool-down so have to assume I’ve still got some time in the tank which is great news. Only been back running for about 4 weeks so this is good news!

So I completed my 60k today!!

God, that was tough! I hadn't done any training in the heat, so was not prepared for the effect it would have. First 10k had lots of steep hills, but I was fresh and they weren't too much trouble. At 10miles was the biggest and steepest hill of the race and it was difficult but it didn't seem to wear me out too much.

So I got to the halfway point in 3hrs which was slightly quicker than I expected, but that's when I made a big mistake... I had asked my mum to meet me there (she's local to that.checkpoint) and to bring my ghost 10s in case my trail shoes were hurting my feet. Feet were a bit achey but not terrible, but I did the swap anyway. 1 mile later my Ghost 10s split all down one side exposing my feet and making it difficult to run. I called my mum back and got her to meet me at the next pub with my trail shoes and swapped back, but for a couple of miles I was walking and running slow.

I think this told my mind it was okay to walk, and then it become difficult to run for any decent length after that. I was also really feeling the effects of the heat. My 20mile training runs were done at a heart rate of 150, but here I couldn't get it below 180 no matter how slow I went, that's the same as when I race a 5k!

So second half was a bit of a plod. My legs and feet were aching so bad from 20 miles on, and I was simply exhausted, but I was determined to keep moving forward no matter how slow.

33 miles in and I hear church bells. I knew that the finish was next door to the church so I perked up a bit as the finish was close. For the next 5 miles those bells never got louder :x
Finally at 38.5 miles I recognize that we are coming up to the finish, but a girl in front has started walking. I tell her to keep going as the finish is up ahead and so we chat for a bit and I'm holding back my pace so we can cross the line at the same time. She then suggests we do a sprint finish (my speciality! :slol: ) so I put the pedal down and it was an easy win. However none of the spectators realised it was her idea and to them it looked like I was being a bit of a dick, oh well

So overall it was a really great experience, and quite humbling to realise just how difficult these ultras are. My total time was 8hrs 40m - much slower than I'd have liked - but the main goal was to cross the finish line, and I did it!

Wow, amazing :o Well done! What do you have planned next?

Bolton 10k for me today. Two-lap course with a big hill early on. Torrential rain timed perfectly, beginning 10 minutes before the start. Really struggled in the first half but recovered in the second and flew through the last few kilometres. Chip time of 41:45. My watch didn't start though so I can't pore over the stats.

Well done. Y'all make me feel inadequate ha. I'm working on diet for the next 5 weeks before my 10k race. No booze or carb heavy meals (snacks don't count! I'm only human). Wanna drop 10lbs.

I can do 10k comfortably in 55 mins and 52 if I go hell for leather but I wanna break that 50 mark for the Mey 10K. The route is supposedly flatter than the route I train so we shall see.

It's on a bank holiday weekend so as soon as it's done I'm getting beer and pizza in. :datass:

Cheers!
That is a quick time for a flat 10k, never mind a hilly one. Great job!

While running my race yesterday I thought "never again", but today I've forgotten all most of the pain. Two months ago I couldn't run a mile from knee injury, so realistically I was never going to be at my best this race. So no specific plans yet, but I'm sure I'll be doing some more ultras and hope to improve each time.

I'm going to take it easy and recover for a week or so and then see how I'm feeling. There is a flat 30k next month that's local to me so I might give that a shot, but perhaps I'll find a 50k around June/July as my next big race.

Awesome efforts Spinny, Johnny and Sat. This thread is getting stronger with every day! Just did today’s 10k in 47:47 after my 15 min stair climb and had a bit still in the tank which is so encouraging. First time ever after 48 mins. I’ve always previously focused on distance and being able to run 10-15 miles comfortably, but I’m trying to focus on speed at the moment and sticking at a 10k limit to see how fast I can get it. Have taken 3 1/2 minutes off in 5 weeks so far - fairly sure that’ll plateau soon.

Meeting a friend later today to decide which races to put in our calendar this year. I’ve already decided to drag my groomsmen out for a 10k on the morning of my wedding in July

They're all big gym-goers but none of them really do cardio. One is a Commonwealth Games medallist in Judo so he'll be fine. The weights-junkies I'm not so sure...

Well done, I ran 23:29 at mine today, my PB for 5k is 23:08 so considering my injury and only being back from running a couple of month's in really chuffed.

My plan is to break 22 minutes this year.

My return from injury is progressing great, ran four miles today and appear to be having no further knee issues!!! I have my next physio appointment tomorrow and I think it will be the last I need (may just book an extra one in know and again to act as an MOT for when I feel it's needed)

My next plan is to get up to five miles and start workout on running faster.

I'm also considering joining a running club, I currently do a bootcamp on Tuesday and Thursday but I'm thinking of stopping the Thursday one so I can do the running club on Thursday. I'll keep the Tuesday one as it's a good workout and it works out other parts of my body which should support my running plus it's variety and keeps fitness interesting.

Anyone else here part of a running club, what are the main benefits?
