New opening for The Simpsons as it goes HD tomorrow. I don't like it that much.
I really miss the show, it's really bad now, they should wrap it up.

Holy gooseberry fool. That bit between them getting home and the TV being turned on was way too long, and should've ended at the couch galloping out of sight, ideally into the sunset.

Looks good to me. It's just a further embellishment of the original, bar the end which I'm gonna assume will conform to the standard Simpsons winning formula of something slightly different every time.

Only gripe is Homer getting hit by the car in the garage.

Not that it matters to me, since I stopped watching the Simpsons years ago.

How long have the characters had shadows on their faces, etc.?

It's a small thing, but I didn't really like that in the movie.

I'd dare say that bird at the start will be something different every time, too.

Better not always take up 1/10th of the show.

How do they get the HDTV is my question, the episode when they got their old one was a classic.

They've changed the opening sequence before, and nobody paid much attention.

I seriously think they're trying to appeal to the Family Guy fans with the parodies in the sofa sequence. Not a bad thing, but it won't get me watching this again.

Didn't work at all for me. If the couch isn't there, you sit on the floor. It will come back. Mine always does.

the couch gag was a potentially good idea ruined by over-indulgence by the writers, which is the same reason why the Simpsons is so crap nowadays. A quote from a critic in it's Wiki page sums it up best for me; "The Simpsons has become a cartoon."

The only reason that sequence was so long is because it was for a particularly short-running episode. It's not like they've never done that before. There's the circus sequence, the molecular universe sequence and the evolution sequence that fulfill the same purpose - to pad out short episodes.

Exactly. Normally it would stop at the couch gag as normal but they obviously wanted to do a longer intro for the first HD episode.

I thought it was ok. At first when I read the thread title I expected new theme music and a totally different intro (which would have been blasphemous of course) but seeing as the original intro is 20 years old it's a nice update.

I still don't think the show is a patch on the golden years of seasons 3-8, but that's another debate for another time. I will say that I did like the movie, so if the new series is along similar lines then it should be ok.

I don't remember the circus gag opening sequence going on for 2 minutes though. Groening should kill the show now as it hasn't been really funny for years.

The circus gag was so irritating, after the first 3 times I just wanted it to go away and never come back.

I thought it was really good, especially the numerous nods to HD.

Its the same one, re-done with all the new characters from over the years shoehorned in.

Why are you complaining about the long sofa gag? It wont be that long on every ep, sometimes they do a really long ones.
