The game is in development at Maxis and will be hitting PCs and Mac sometime next year.

EA’s put up an official announcement post on its website -

“The Sims franchise is fueled by the passion and creativity of its millions of fans around the world. Their continued devotion to the franchise ignites the fire of creativity of the team at The Sims Studio, driving them to continually improve and innovate on one of the world’s most successful simulation game that has sold more than 150 million copies worldwide.”

TheSimsHub, a Sims fan site, has put up an extended version of EA’s announcement which reveals that the game won’t require players to be connected to the internet in order to play it.

“The Sims 4 celebrates the heart and soul of the Sims themselves, giving players a deeper connection with the most expressive, surprising and charming Sims ever in this single-player offline experience,” it reads. “The Sims 4 encourages players to personalize their world with new and intuitive tools while offering them the ability to effortlessly share their creativity with friends and fans.”

Maxis’ recently released SimCity was subject to a lot of negative reactions because of the game’s always-on internet requirement.

I would expect to see a trailer soon, most likely at EA's pre-E3 conference on June 10th.

Wonderful news about it not needing to be online. I can't see this being any different to the sims 3 though.

Didn't they only just release the last one?
The Sims 3 was bizarre, it was an (obviously) casual game that put more of a strain on the computer than most normal pc releases

There are at least two more TS3 expansions in the works. With TS4 likely to hit stores toward the end of 2014, I'd expect one last hurrah for TS3 this time next year. The wife wants an Open For Business expansion, as she cannot understand why it has not yet been released.

It is strange how draining the sims 3 is. Even on a high end machine, it takes forever to load.

Are they announcing it now, so they can reveal it for the next gen consoles? Because why would they announce it, when they have a few more expansions to sell?

It probably won't be released on next-gen consoles, though I expect they might get spin-offs. The Wii U could probably handle a Sims game and be pretty true to the PC versions, but given EA's awful attitude toward Nintendo (because they wouldn't let EAhand over the eShop and let it be turned into the Origin Store, IIRC?), that'll never happen.

There's just no getting away from the fact this looks like complete toss. PS2-era graphics in 2014. What's the excuse.

It will just look the same as the Sims 3 probably. They just ran out of expansion ideas, so want to start again.

It's probably because the target audience for The Sims don't tend to have massively powerful PCs.

That didn't stop them from making The Sims 3 run like gooseberry fool even on high end machines.

At the series height the amount of expansion packs we used to sell for The Sims was nothing short of astonishing.

Video game retail used to fun back then.
