“I’m like, ‘I’ve lost it’, like, ‘I don’t know how to do this anymore’.

“And I was like ‘please’, I was begging Anne [Garefino, South Park’s long-time producer], ‘do not let this go on the air, because I don’t want the South Park legacy to be ruined, and this show is going to ruin it because it’s so bad, and I’m just going to feel terrible.’

“And [she] just ended up going, ‘it’s just gotta go on the air Trey, just let it go on the air.’

“And I just went home and I was depressed and couldn’t sleep. And I got up the next day and they were like, ‘Dude, people really liked that show’.”

The offending episode? Season 10’s ‘Make Love, Not Warcraft’ – which fans remember as a classic.

“It is still, to this day, one of our most famous episodes that people will cite as one of the best of all time,” Trey goes on. “And I literally wanted to kill myself over that episode.”

They need to double whatever the strawberry float they're paying Anne Garefino.

So did trey just think the episode was really poor quality or something? Or maybe he didn't think the humour was right in it. Maybe it changed the way he looked at South Park fans after that episode as I think the humour in the show started changing after that episode, for the better.

Just watched episodes 1-3 of the new series online this morning. I haven't watched it in a while and by god this is incredible.

Did you watch last season? It was a lot better than this one so far.

The last "new" episode I saw was when they built the Condo's and Mall at Kenny's house. Prior to that the last season I actually saw was the one with the episode where they set up the wrestling arena in one of their back yards. It's been a looong time.

You might be better off watching the last season or two before this, as they're carrying plot points and characters over now. Also, they've been better than this one so far.

I'd say last season was the best of recent series. Stands out a lot compared to the last... I dunno, 4? This season has been ok.

Apparently this is the first season where the staff didn't get together before hand to bounce ideas off each other. They usually go on a team building style getaway to come up with ideas. I guess they assumed the election would give them enough material.

This week with Trump will also kill their "Giant Douche can do anything and get away with it" bit. If people are starting to turn on him as it looks, they're going to have to find a way to shoehorn that in, too.

I think you might be right, they were gambling on the Presidential race giving them more to play off, but from a satirists point of view, it's been awful. How on earth do you satirise a monstrosity like Trump that basically does the job for you beforehand?

I thought this week's episode was another pretty weak one. It felt like it had been rushed to put it together, which is odd considering the two week break, and the fact it contained nothing that topical. Some scenes (like the watersports one,) felt really forced, and out of place, and I don't think I've seen them used recycled material before like they did in this episode.

One part that made me laugh, initially, but more out of shock than anything, was Butters calling Kyle "uncle Kyle". strawberry floating hell. It's good to know the show can still pull some shocking moves after 20 years, but it would be nice if it was funny, too.

Also, I'm sure Silva used to use the other troll's nickname on Steam in the past.

Karl wrote:South Park fans, I never really got into the show. Please help! Which are the good seasons?

I think I've enjoyed most seasons a hell of a lot, on reflection. The first couple seem pretty crap and childish now, like almost two seasons of nothing but fart jokes, but beyond that, they're consistently at least very funny. At times, I remember not liking new ways of doing things, and so on, but looking back, the show has changed so much, in small incremental ways, it's hard to pin down a concrete dividing period anywhere, but I'll try anyway. I always consider season 5 one of the best of the old style South Park, and probably a good starting point, although there are plenty of real classics in season 3 and 4, 5 is the most consistently hilarious.

If you watch that season and enjoy it, I'd then say you should probably just carry on from there, and you can see the show evolve as it goes on. The scope of topics for episodes grows from there on out, and you can see the animation techniques change as it goes on, too. You'll probably want to watch the movie quite early on as well. It's not like there's ever been much of an over-arching plot within South Park, but there are little details in early episodes and the film that go on to become canon within the South Park universe.

Things start to get much bigger from season 10 onwards, (I can't believe that season is 10 years old, it feels like it aired barely a couple of years ago,) as you start getting into much more elaborate multi-part episodes, like Cartoon Wars, Go God Go, and season 11's Imaginationland.

But yeah, start with season 5, and the film, or maybe the film first, as it's earlier, and see if you want to keep on with it.

Or just hop into last two seasons if you want to see what the more current, overtly satirical South Park is like.

Season 5 was start of the change - but still fairly odd little stories

Look for Imagination Land, Cartoon Wars, Go God Go as multiple episodes which are good

In ways, yeah, but it's still very much rooted in the experience of the kids, rather than the episodes focusing on any one of the broader cast as it does later. Also, it's the season with the Scott Tenorman episode, so it's automatically best.

Imagine actually recommending season 1 to somebody. Those episodes have not aged well. :dread:

It's no surprise Trey Parker changed Cartman's voice :dread:

I like every season. Even 1 has a certain nostalgic charm. But I'd say from 4 it gets a lot better and then dips later on around....10/11 and is then super inconsistent.

Latest episode is pretty average.

Thanks Knoyleo, I appreciate it. I'll give the film a watch, then start with S05. I've seen a couple of eps my friends have shown me before - the one about Scientology, and the one about World of Warcraft - and thought they were pretty funny, so I'm looking forward to it. I'm excited :toot:
