I was on a couple of Star Trek meme groups a few years ago and Tuvix was always put forward as the dictionary definition of bad Trek, but the episode was awesome! It is a clunky thought experiment of a premise but it was well acted and the end painted everyone in a very challenging light - nobody comes out looking good. Was very pleasantly surprised.
I think a lot of people overlook how clunky the whole of Voyager was in the early years. That episode doesn’t really stand out as a bad one in my eyes. I love Voyager and it’s easily my favourite Star Trek but I can see how, much like TNG and the death of Yar Voyager properly settles in once Kes leaves (to go back to Yorkshire I assume) and they find Seven.
I assume it was just fedora-wearing misogynist neckbeards on Trek boards hating on Tuvix because the reception page on Wiki has some people putting it in the top ten Voyager eps. I can see why from a philosophical standpoint as it does ask a hard question with no right answer.
I'd say there was still a good season and a half after Yar died before TNG hit it's stride. I'd say it might be closer to Wesley leaving.
I'm almost going in expecting to be disappointed by Voyager from what I've heard so I'm actually bouncing the other way. There was a run of about five eps in a row where Janeway was doing her stupid governess holodeck porn with those irritating kids which was crap, and it's obviously finding it's feet, but I really liked the
Kazon traitor subplot, and the episode where that came to a head with Neelix doing journalism was really fun.
Kes is an irritating character but I don't think it's Jennifer Lien's fault. It jars that she's able to basically do Nurse Ogawa's job with zero formal training - she goes from "hey doc what are a meddsinn?" to "I've isolated the DNA strands from the transporter buffer as you asked Doctor yadda yadda yadda". And at the same time she also gets psychic training from Tuvok - it's a wonder she has time to get groomed by Neelix!
