Looking back, the old EU was far too expansive to be retained - too many stories had been told, too many gaps filled in. Not a lot of room for new tales.

I read the entire Vong arc and you're quite right, it wasn't very well executed at all, but it had its moments. TBF, if Chewie is to die, I'd rather they drop a moon on him than let him go down like Fett.

Plus Disney would have had to pay if they decided to keep it and use any of the characters or refer to any of the events.

Would they?

I imagine that one of the main contractual parts of writing something for the EU would have been that anything you created was property of Lucasfilm and could be used in anything else they saw fit.

EDIT: Mara Jade being the biggest example as she appeared in countless books and a few games as well.

My understanding is that Disney bought everything Star Wars related from Lucas. The whole thing but they decided to scrap the existing expanded universe so that they could start a fresh but using any previously created characters however they wanted to.

The general feeling I've had from friends who have seen Solo is that it doesn't really need to exist, there is no sense of danger because all the main characters are obviously alive long after the events in this tale, Lando's droid is worse than Jar Jar (is that even possible?), but it's a really enjoyable movie nonetheless.

I really don't think Lando's droid was even close to Jar Jar. Some of her jokes missed, but Jar Jar is another tier.

I can’t see how she is as bad as Jar Jar and even if some people feel that way then at least she gets killed off.

Whilst there is no sense of danger with Han, Lando and Chewie. There is still with the other characters, as we saw with several of them being killed off.

Back on Force Unleashed for the first time in ages and I can't remember it being this buggy. Unfair, yes. Buggy, I don't think so.

Yeah it didn't really leave much uncovered, they could have turned some of them into films, I've always thought the Thrawn trilogy would have made a great trilogy of films if it had been made when the main cast were much younger.

Yeah that's a fair point on Chewie, watching a moon dropped on him in a film would probably make for pretty epic scene! Certainly as you say better than a feeble death like Boba Fett!

I read the Thrawn Trilogy growing up, and always wanted to see it made into VII, VIII & IX. I understand why that can never be, but you're right, there were some very movie-worthy stories there.

I'm glad they're at least able to cherry pick from the old EU as they please, since that way they'll ideally be picking only the best material and plots and doing them justice.

Yeah, thought Thrawn was handled really well in Rebels and the new novel, it's clear that they got Timothy Zahn involved in writing for him and even though his story unfolds very differently he still very much feels like the Thrawn of the original Thrawn trilogy.

Kylo is probably my favourite character from the new films, think Adam Driver plays him really well and find him by far the most interesting character they've introduced, feel like his character definitely draws on elements of all the Solo children from the books (Particularly Jacen).

The characters I really hope we see revisited in some form are Kyle Katarn and Mara Jade. Both were two of my favourite characters growing up and I'd love to see them acknowledged in the new canon.

Mara Jade might work if her story is sandwiched between ROTJ and TFW, and Kylo Ren kills her, or Snoke does so soon after. Otherwise, I think that she'd be best left in the Legends, given her special place in the Old EU. To be honest, that significance will probably be why she never makes it into the new canon. Kyle Katarn could be one of the Knights of Ren, I guess - someone to be redeemed at a later time.

I would like to see the Trandoshan-esque Saba Sebatyne make it into the films or one of these new TV shows, too. She was easily my favorite character from the New Jedi Order/Vong arc, and probably one of the more transplant-able characters.

Not even close.

Still not a great character, but still, nowhere near Jar Jar bad.

Jar Jar was somewhat redeemed in my eyes in his last Clone Wars arc, with Mace Windu.

I don't know why you'd listen to the soundtrack first, but alright. Hope you enjoy the film proper!
