Ukip is set for civil war after the former leadership favourite Steven Woolfe was banned from standing because his application was 17 minutes late, making Diane James the new frontrunner to succeed Nigel Farage.

Woolfe conceded defeat within minutes of the announcement by Ukip’s vetting panel, criticising its choice but saying he wished the other candidates well.

It is the right decision to not let him stand as we all know that right wingers love deadlines and think it is a travesty to democracy if they are extended.

I love how they're trying to describe it as him being 'excluded' when it's actually he didn't apply on time.
Sounds like just the kind of person you want in charge.

They are only doing that to distract from the drink driving conviction that he has been hiding/lying about.

Mr Woolfe, the party's immigration spokesman, submitted his nomination papers 17 minutes late on Sunday, blaming the delay on technical issues with the registration site.

He submitted his application at 11:35 BST - before the noon deadline - but it did not successfully go through until 12:17 BST.
He said he had been in contact with party officials prior to the deadline passing to alert them to the problems, and had sent pictures, upon request, to prove it.

Seems a bit unfair to exclude him if this is true.

No, I disagree. How many weeks ago was it now that F*rage said he was strawberry floating back off into deserved obscurity and irrelevance?

"Darling, I'm thinking about running for leader of my political party"
"Oh, very good dear. Best get your paperwork submitted then"
"Actually, I was thinking of doing it 25 minutes before the absolute deadline"
"Oh... isn't this, though, important, isn't it? What if something goes wrong and there's a delay?"
"My dear, you don't do anything in advance in politics. You wait until the last moment and then announce with a dramatic flourish"
"Seems silly to me, my love, but you know best"
*does strawberry float all for weeks*

As much as I never want to support anyone to do with UKIP, that exact same sentiment could have applied to the voters who missed the registration deadline for the Brexit vote due to technical errors, surely? And we were happy to let them have it extended on those grounds, despite it being important enough for people to have registered much earlier.

I think the point is that UKIP types were not happy to extend voter registration.

To be fair, I've no idea if Woolfe was one of them so maybe he isn't personally being hypocritical, but UKIP would be if they extended their deadline.
