How are you finding that YouGo thing GG? Useful at all? I've been using Facebook mostly to meet people/share interests.

My induction day is on the 22nd, and I believe my course starts the same day, possibly a few after. Must say I'm feeling quite excited.

Well Freshers Week starts at Abertay on the 8th with classes beginning the week after. I believe Edinburgh start a week after and Aberdeen the week after that. One of my mates goes to Sunderland and he starts at the same time as Aberdeen.

In general I think the Scottish unis start the earliest, but obviously finish a bit earlier too.

According to someone I met a while back who has just finished their first year in my Creative Writing course, the lecturer person will give you a subject to write about, you write it, and then read it out.

I really hope this isn't the case as, like you said, I need time to come up with ideas. I don't think I'll be able to guff out a short story on the spot...

As for accommodation, I'm waiting for an e-mail to apply for mine, as well as all the starter pack gubbins. I hope it comes soon, I don't want a massive rush for applying for my minor subject and buying books and all the rest of it.

YouGo is useful for finding people specifically doing your course... and it's more open to all that finding friends stuff. Facebook I think people use a lot more for their personal life, at least I do.

I guess the point of YouGo is to make friends before uni, and so because it has that audience, you can do that. So far about 16 people have found me, and I've "added" one. If you're active on the forums and people like your profile while searching for students on their course/campus, then it is one way to find people. Adding your uni and course is mandatory in the profile so it has to work, whereas on Facebook it is not. Also, I don't think anyone knows whether to list their uni as the year they're going to graduate, or the year they start. So you're going to get a lot of confusion there.

Yougo has worked for me though. There are some common subjects on the forum for working stuff out with each other e.g. questions on accomm, course requirements, costs etc.

tnman: art is the same. I've had to sketch my face in under 5 minutes before. I've learnt to draw/paint a lot faster as a result, which means my work is generally more expressive and less obsessive and in some cases, overdone and uncharacteristic. Other times you will get the time you want. Speed is one factor in how you create something. Sometimes under pressure you will make more instinctive and intuitive decisions.

So, what is a 'free module'? I've heard the term banded about, indicating something extra you can do outside of your course, and I'm interested in getting involved, particularly if it's a short-term language course.

I'm contemplating applying for a student radio show this time. I was a regular co-presenter on my flatmates show two years ago and I think I could just about get a good show together. His was a post-punk show called 'Hang the DJ' and every week he had a friend on to co-present as it made the show more interesting and removed the pressure from him. Its an idea I would likely steal if I decide to go for it.

Is this the same thing as major/minor? I'm not sure. Basically I think you can sign up to attend lectures for another course in a different or same faculty depending on the uni.

Free modules are the modules you choose. It's not outside of your course, its part of your course, you just choose from a selection of modules to add to the required modules to make up the credits for each year. You can choose modules from outside of your course (e.g. I've chosen an economics module but am reading politics), usually they are chosen from the same faculty (e.g. social sciences, or more specifically, your own degree as there are more modules then there are choices) but it's possible to do language modules if you're reading an unrelated subject. Your chances of doing a maths module if you only did it to GCSE level are unlikely though. The general aim is that they compliment your overall degree and gives you more choice in what you study.

Hm if people are getting confirmations back now I need to get in touch with my uni to sort out my place 'cause I have 2 units yet to submit for my BTEC. The condition was only to pass but that was because you don't get given unconditional places unless you are not on a course at the time. I already have enough UCAS points so they should let me on the course and I will probably get my BTEC next year, although I may have to pay exam/resubmission fees, I don't know.

How much did most people spend during Freshers week? I've got about £20.

I've put aside £100 in my budgeting considering I'm in Farnham, a town nothing like London - mostly pubs and bars (no clubs) - so that should be enough.

Since I move in in eight days (strawberry floating hell) I can consider myself to have a bout four weeks of "Fresher's week". Win! Got to do some introductory classes in photography and film making but fine art (which will be a lot more work) isn't until November so should be fairly clear sailing.

Small towns are often just as expensive at cities because they have less trade. Be warned.

I wouldn't really spend more than a tenner on a round of pints at a pub though. I doubt I'll go to the pub more than ten times (few times per week). Rest of the time I'll get more booze for my money for house parties, which are apparently the main social thing at UCCA.

Main thing I was un-factoring is the cost of clubs, which I pretty much never go to anyway. That and the cost of drinks in central London is horrendous.

The town is about the same size as mine. Here pints are about £2.50 (local brew) to £2.80 (import).
