It was Doninic West's decision, he wanted time off to make movies.

We just finished episode 508 tonight. Only 2 more to go. :( Omar.

I thought it was because he didn't like spending so much time away from his family.

The Wire, 10 years on: ‘We tore the cover off a city and showed the American dream was dead’

David Simon’s ‘anti-cop show’ struggled to find an audience before being lauded as a classic and making stars of Idris Elba, Michael B Jordan and others. Here, some of its writers and stars look back at a series that changed TV for ever

Brilliant read.
Is ‘All the Pieces Matter’ out yet? Anyone read it?

It really takes a second or third viewing of season five to catch just how many dumb tiny cameos there are.

The strawberry floating florist for crying out loud!

It really is striking how the show went from something as good as season four to something as lacklustre amd shallow as season five.

This third (?) viewing of the whole thing has given me a greater appreciation of the first season, strangely. I do wonder whether the shine will eventually wear off The Wire as time goes on, whether it'll hold up both as the exemplary standard of high quality television, or whether it simply becomes a go-to relic to remember the 2000s.

Because of the sheer volume of top, hyped TV shows from the past few years it feels like there's no longer enough time to watch whole series more than once, and watching the finale montage made me ponder whether I'll actually ever watch The Wire again.

4>1>2>3>5

EDIT - Oh yeah, Steve Earle's version of Way Down In The Hole is so bad I must have originally blocked it from my memory. :(

Having watched it all again recently for I think the fourth time, I would agree with all of this. Think 3>2 though. 5 really is comparatively weak, particularly Mcnulty's storyline.

Do people actually watch the 10 minute credit intro? strawberry float that.

Still outstanding television that stands up today as leagues ahead of anything else I've ever watched.

Season 2 doesn't get enough love, I think it might be my favourite. Although it's all one story 1 and 3 are more connected than the others, and I think 2 gets a bad rep because on your initial watch you want to know what's going on with the drug dealers rather than spending time with the dockworkers.

Its clearly 4th and 3rd season as joint best seasons. Then 1, then 2 and 5th season easily in 5th place.

5 is categorically the worst season. 4 and 3 are fantastic, 2 and 1 are merely great.

I don't think it's "greatest show of all time" material like many have maintained it to be, but it's certainly a cut above most other shows of it's ilk.
