I nearly put do a PhD on The Wire, but I'm pretty sure you can't do a PhD on The Wire.

I nearly choked laughing at this picture. My instant reaction was 'very impressive', followed by laughter at the typo. Seriously though, you have an awesome life if you are lecturing on The Wire. I envy you greatly.

I'd love to have gone to that, as I'm a local. Down in Sussex though. Come lecture here!

Don't. There's a very good reason why books like this exist:

I remember hearing about that at the time. Was gutted to have missed it. More upsetting was when I googled 'the wire as social science fiction', just now, and read the first result, a mail piece about the undergraduate module of the same name at my university, York.

Oh, Pat from Norwich. Your deranged, anti-intellectual ramblings have prompted me to take an angry-nap. I hope you're happy.

It was a pretty good two days actually. Spoke to a few people covering it for The Guardian, who I think approached it slightly more positively than anyone from The Mail would have done.

Next up, the UB40 conference in Birmingham next month.

Yes, it's real.

the wire is the sort of thing guardian readers watch - dull, slow paced and foreign.

 Trust a Daily Mail reader to think the fact a show isn't British is a negative.

Slow-paced is also not a negative.

"Slow paced" can be a negative but foreign isn't. I'm not saying The Wire is slow though, it does well establishing the characters.
