Horrible way to go out, but Bassett has to try and intercept that great ball in there. Plenty of positives from the tournament and that game though, matching a very good Japanese team.

Third placed play-off should be fun.

It's like World War II, in Women's Football form. England vs. Germany, USA vs, Japan.

Sucky way to go out but a great tournament performance by England

Must be absolutely heartbreaking but really proud of the whole team. Hopefully this World Cup will see an increase in the popularity of the women's game; I know I'm much more likely to tune in if I see a game on the TV now. Massive success on the whole.

Well, with Blatter (supposedly) resigned, maybe the FA could put in a bid to stage a Woman's World Cup here in England That'll raise the profile of woman's football ten-fold!

Didn't think either should have been a pen and from a neutrals view, that OG was hilarious, its very unlucky to manage that but still funny.

But if Bassett didn't lunge and try to clear the ball, the Japanese player would have been in on goal. Complete fluke of a goal :x

Germany have been on top for most of this one, but Aluko has made England a lot more threatening since coming on.

I said at half time that this would go to penalties. Still think it will.

Beating Germany in a WC on penalties would nail them on for the SPOTY team award

Great way to finish their tournament. Even better after some German guy Tweeted me calling my mother a whore after I said the German team were arseholes.

As you said, brilliantly way to end the tournament and very fitting to win it in the manner they did. Would be great if they won the team award at the Sports Personality.

We now live in a world where an England team has beaten a Germany team at a world cup with a penalty.

I'd be curious to watch England Ladies vs England Men's, see who wins. Because let's face it, the mens team are strawberry floating gooseberry fool.

Err, the men's team would win, pretty comfortably.

I can imagine them being more up for beating the women's team than they are for most international games

Anyone else watching the final?

Gonna give it a watch. Bit concerned that some of the Japanese women look like Japanese teenage boys.

What has annoyed me most about the coverage of this tournament so far has been the awful studio coverage, the conversation has been really gooseberry fool.

Loved the Vancouver stadium though, never understood why an English team has built a stadium like this with this roofing system. Would make a mint from concerts and events during the summer.
