I think some people must think that this is there moment to shine and that they will be able to "grab the bull by the horns" and demonstrate something amazing to the higher ups that will then result in their further promotion and eventual rule over everything! Whereas in reality they just end up pissing everyone off and probably getting worse results than if they had just let everyone get on with their jobs with minimal oversight.

That’s exactly it.

This guy is quite amusing though in his incompetence and hypocrisy. After trying to ban people from using their phone in work time, he sits there with headphones on for hours. Members of the team are calling over asking for help with work, but he can’t hear them. He demands people give notice if they want to leave early, but happily “works from home” without telling anybody. A junior member asked for help yesterday and it was astonishing just how loud the sigh was when he had to get up and go and help.

I have not clashed with him yet, but I am quite looking forward to it when I do.

Whilst I accept that there are no doubt circumstances when it make sense, in general I find the "do as I say, not as I do" attitude of some people to be infuriating at times!

And I think we are all looking forward to you posting it on here!

I've always been very lucky in that pretty much everyone I have worked either alongside or underneath has been a decent human being.

Any situations where I've had authority or leadership over others I've also tried not to be an idiot as well and I've never had any negative feedback - which either means I was doing it well or that everyone was just slagging me off in private!

Salary would be similar to what I'm on now but the work is more interesting, it's closer to home and they seem to be very flexible over working hours which is great from a family perspective.

However current place are now seeming keen to keep me on and have gone away to think about what they can offer me to try and stop me from walking!

You go girl!

Great opportunity here if you want to stay with your existing company and get more money or career advancement. Although you could ask your existing company if you are worth more to them, why have they been underpaying you and if you do stay with them, when will any rise be backdated to....

Cheers!

Yeah I'm not sure what level of negotiation I can get into now, with either side. My gut tells me to go with the new role as it seems to be genuinely more interesting and offers greater flexibility, but if my current place comes back with a ridiculous offer I might find it hard to turn down! If that does happen do people think it's valid to talk to the new place and say "my current job have offered me this to stay, can you match it?" Or is that being too cheeky?
No, not cheeky at all. Early on in my career (1994, one year after I started work on £10k) I was on 17.5k and my original boss who had moved elsewhere offered me a job at his place for £20k. So I was all set to resign and the director of my current company offered me £21k to stay. So I went back to my new potential employer and said I've been offered £21. So they said we will give you £23. I then went back to my current company and said, match the £23k and I will stay. They gave me £23.5k and I stayed where I was. I enjoyed the job anyway and being given an extra 6k sweetened the deal.

Nice work!

I'm still waiting to hear back from my current place as to what they might be able to offer me but I think I will definitely take your advice and see whether the new company are prepared to up their offer in response.

Just fire all managers, that'll work out fine. Why would anyone be doing a job they don't want to do.

Has anyone had to attend a hackathon where they worked?

I volunteered at work and will be taking part in one in a few weeks.

What kind of strawberry floating place just gives you a pay rise these days? It must be a front for money laundering or something.

I'm guessing this is a small private company rather than a large corporate, right?

Then it must be some annual merit increase. Huge companies normally have set budgets to work with and don't just dish out pay rises at random points in the year.

Yes it was an annual one, but as I've only been there a few months I wasn't eligable, but my boss put in a request for me to get it anyway.

Applicants are strongly advised to use the criteria in the person specification as sub-headings in their application to make it clear how they meet each of the selection criteria.

There's 39 points of criteria in the "Person Specification". strawberry float you, and strawberry float job applications.

I haven't been given a raise in nearly a year and I'm being paid less than people who do less work than me. :/
