The joys of working at an MSP.

When I'm on site it's fine because people are patient with you and treat you like a human being. banana splits on the phone just don't care about you. They want their problem fixed and fixes now regardless of the fact you're dealing with an entire network being down amongst other things. There's that and also printers. When I hear the word printer on the phone I recoil in my chair. strawberry float printers man haha

I've worked with the public in both capacities, face to face and phonecalls. People behave much much better in person.

People with printers are so strawberry floating lazy. They won't walk 20 steps more to use a printer it's ridiculous.

Printers are always a source of frustration!

One thing that annoys me about our printer setup at work is that we moved to a fully networked system several years back where you send your document to a general printing queue and can then theoretically print it out from any printer within our global organisation. Hit print at your desk and then flash your badge at any printer to get your document.

Now that is great in some ways and I'm sure there are occasions where someone in Slough wants to collect their document in Madrid. But for 99.999% of the time Tony in Slough wants his document to print from the printer that is 10 yards away from him. Why as an organisation do we need to send untold amounts of data around the world for someone to print a document a stones throw away from them?!

It just seems so wasteful. It's like sending a postman to Lands End and back in order to stick a letter through your neighbours door!

We have the same system and it works well. Our printers are always breaking so it’s easy to just send something to print and then find one that is actually working.

Plus people travel between offices quite often so it saves them having to spend most of their day trying to connect to a printer.

And Tony in Slough will not be complaining about it when he gets seconded to the Madrid office.

Oh don't get me wrong I get that there are benefits to it, it just feels like a lot of added infrastructure and "wasted" bandwidth to achieve something that for a large percentage of the time is overkill.

I never liked Tony in Slough, the guy is a tool. If he gets the Madrid gig then that will just confirm we are in the worst timeline.

Tony in Slough was the guy who came up with the idea of networked printers. It was all part of his masterplan to justify the expensive printer bandwidth with European trips. I bet he’ll be off to the Barbados office soon after. :x

Classic Tony move.

One of my friends from work left the company todaya due to many of the reasons that've been annoying me. Luckily my best friend still works there, but that's one more person leaving (another one of my friends left a few months ago) that not only will make it busier as we'll have less but also was a large source of me being able to laugh and joke and stop myself from falling into a pit of despair :(

It's a three month period in which I'll be continuing to work overtime. I'm walking away from a job, which to be honest, is a fairly easy way to make 36k a year. It's also a job I spent four years at university doing a specific qualification for and a further two years training, the sum of which is not easily transferable into a different industry. In moving into a different job, for which I have nothing specific as of yet (but some ideas), I will most likely be on at least 10k less.

So you have to ask yourself why would I quit a job I wanted to do as a child, in something I have been fascinated by my entire life. It must be pretty gooseberry fool right? Yup, working for the Met Office really is that gooseberry fool.

Interesting to see if I have taken back my resignation in two and a half months after a minor panic. :slol:

biz has been mental this past week. I've got enough ongoing orders and new (sometimes stupid i.e. I need it in 24hrs) enquiries to boggle my mind for the first time in ages.

At least 7 or 8 simultaneous engagements going on, one large shirt run and multiple items for another, meaning I need to do some actual time management. :slol: Other stuff that I hadn't even had time to quote for or get paid up yet which means more the next 1-2 weeks after I'm done this 10 working days or so. One more local restaurant stuff and a returning customer (3rd time) over in the states.

I might even turn a wee net profit this month if it keeps going :) (after rent and so on which is also part of my living costs as I work at home).

Not bad for 1 wierdo geezer trying to get by, it's funny how many enquiries assume I'm a company too. "It's great that you guys are in town!"

Not sure whether I should correct them that I'm independent operating under a brand or not..

Sorry if this comes across wrong, or if I've missed something, but shouldn't you be quids in at 10 hours days? Shouldn't you be breaking even at part time hours so that you're covered for quieter periods? Are you planning on raising your prices so that this is more sustainable?

It's quite complicated so I have PM'd you :)

short of it is you shouldn't account for a net profit if you don't have to and I'm not making that kind of loss/debts, my margins are very healthy and good to grow.

He wants to keep it going for a year before he brings anyone on. He did ask me if I was still interested though and I told him yes.

Just been offered a job! My first external job interview in years and I got it. Verbally accepted it so far. Was happy to get a London allowance too which bumped the pay rise up nicely :)
I still have a pending interview next week internally so not sure if to cancel that now or just go do it anyway for the sake of practice or networking.

Just go do it anyway, always best to keep your options open until you actually start the new job you've accepted.

strawberry floating furious! So a week ago I went to my bosses about a pay rise as I’ve noticed that for my position I’m about £10K under paid, so tried to get at least a £7k pay rise, of course the usual we can only do inflation as the budget is tight blah blah blah, then a junior member of my team has been offered a new job paying the going rate for my level of skill and experience which is great but my bosses countered her offer with the same salary despite saying the money wasn’t there.

I only know this as I get on well with her and helped her with interview techniques and have trained her up pretty well. I don’t think I’ve felt this little value to my position in any job.
