I had a similar thing happen years back when I was a Technical Author (I know right) I went to meet a guy to start documenting one of the system he managed and it had snowed, I got from mine (Hastings with a 2 mile walk to the station) to Bright and then up Elm Grove (strawberry floating long big ass hill) and he wasn't there and just went "yeah its really snow so I can't make it" despite living 2 roads from the hospital.

Ended up spending the day in the pub but getting paid for it.

Plot twist: Errkal paid for his day of merriment by signwriting for the pub, now known as 'The duck and ejdiifnsmamjdjr'

We've got a new contract coming to our department soon, and because I don't think they'll prepare well enough I've been looking for a new job as a back up. Turns out I can't find anything I want to do, that fits my skill set, that I'm qualified for, it's really tough. I've learnt a lot on the job, and also I would most likely have to change sector which seems most people can't be arsed with and just want people who know everything inside and out from the off.

Our workload is about to jump at least 4x, perhaps more. It's going to be a massive undertaking, but it feels like until very recently I was the only one who thought we need to start preparing for this eventuality, which almost everyone else saying they'll wait for more concrete confirmation from the customer.

I've been trying to prepare my current place for the gooseberry fool storm that is about to hit them. I put in a 2000 word document to our IT team to explain where our systems are not up to the task of running our department and what use-cases need to be refined (thankfully this is getting some traction, but it's slow going, and I've been telling my manager we need to do this for a year). I also said we're going to need more people which I was met with comments saying that's not going to happen. So, I created a basic profitability for the proposed work, and then broke down our processes, how long certain tasks would take, and then used some calculations based on start date, end date and hours worked per day to find how many people we need. When I explained to my manager we were going to need at least 3 more people he didn't look well.

We're waiting on the MD to return to work next week then we can see how things will go. Also, I've been asking for a pay rise for the last year and only received a bit of what I wanted.

strawberry float it's a bit stressful.

You sound like a senior person and if you aren't, someone who has a real interest in improving things. I'd imagine you can get what you want pay rise wise if your responsibilities and contribution is similar to people paid more within your company

Yes?

Thanks. With the wage it's a difficult balance of it being a role created especially for me in a growing department, no direct comparison between roles in other departments, and the fact the company pays pretty appallingly overall in general. But it's a high margin department, and I know what a few managers are on, and I can compare to somewhat similar roles I've seen advertised online, and I've been at this for a while now.
I'm just trying to figure out how I would deal with it if they don't work on
a. Our systems
b. the staff levels
c. my wage
Because I just wouldn't want to work under those conditions.
Logically, none of these requests are unreasonable from what I can see, but I just get the feeling they'll make it as difficult as possible just because that's the way they do things, like they assume because you're asking for something then they can't give you everything out of principle. But I'm getting ahead of myself, I'm just nervous, it still needs to be discussed fully

Is there any better feeling than passing an interview for a promotion? Especially when it's moving from menial work to something you will love? Getting on the job training for ccna, though a lot will be done at home. Up one pay grade for now and then once I pass the exam up another again. Edit, no actually up two once I'm certified.

Just from an office politics side of things because I'm not a loud arrogant personality some people like to spread that I get cherry picked for projects by my manager. I just get on with things. Well having the technical new product manager who doesn't even work here pick me on the tech interview is sufficient vindication.

My line manager returned. She was absolutely fine with me, just as though nothing had happened.

She's now signed off again, indefinitely .

I've been offered her job on a temporary basis. It's a poisoned chalice so I'm almost certainly going to turn it down.

I maintain that the requirements nearly all employers put down are absolute bollocks. Just apply for the jobs and see what happens.

I've employed someone before and don't even know what the job spec said. They're normally written by corporate or an agency rather than the interviewer.

It's a wishlist, if there are other qualities more important for whatever in the job spec, which you don't know, other stuff can be trained or fulfilled elsewhere. Some stuff just "might be handy" etc. I've got interviews I barely qualified for on paper. And there are people who get jobs and quit in a week so.. You can train skills but you can't train people.

I have a massive skill set but I can't work in a normal environment. Talent rarely means gooseberry fool...

Just had a 1 to 1 with my boss to give me a word of warning about consistently being late. I'm late a lot, but I'm never late by literally any more than 3 minutes. Obviously I'm gonna leave earlier, but damn, when he asked why I'm late it was hard to not just say "would you try to make it on time to something you absolutely hate?" rather than just "traffic".

If you are always late by a few minutes, leave for work a few minutes earlier and problem solved. You know the traffic is going to be there so plan for it.

Why would I want to go to work earlier than 9 and spend even more time there?

I guess it depends on the job, but for most people does it really matter if somebody is 3 minutes late?

I am almost always in before everybody else so nobody really knows if I am late in, but I really couldn’t care less if other people get in at 9.03. It makes no difference to anything.
