The Work Thread 2 - Get back to work!

I've just been promoted from my old department working on Java development to work on server administration. I'm paid an extra 400 a month after tax but really hate the job and am tempted to ask to be demoted back to my old department. The problem is the extra money comes in really handy. The main issue is I think I'm going to get stuck in administration roles for the rest of my life if I stay. What do you reckon I should do?

Don't set your career path with a job you don't like. You spend a lot of your life working so it needs to be as enjoyable as possible, balanced with how much you are prepared to earn.

£400 a month extra is a lot of money.

But the rest of your working life is a long time.

Are there other career paths that you would be tempted by that can also lead to higher salaries?

I'd never stick development for an administration job unless I just didn't really care about it either way. Sounds like you would be happier in your old role which is more important.

You can always run out of money so having it isn't such a big deal, being depressed is.

Hi mate, I got promoted begining of this year to a senior position, I was basically deputy to my team leader (senior underwriter) and after a few months I really wasn't enjoying the job. I decided I needed to give it 6 month's at least to make sure I enjoyed the job or not.

Nothing changed, some weeks I did enjoy it but I mostly hated it. I was spending weekends, evenings and holidays worrying about work. It was making me anxious, it makes no sense, I wanted to do such a good job I was putting pressure on my self, I knew it was ridiculous but I couldn't switch off, the job it seems although I could do it was not for me.

I got a little fortunate as my department were recruiting for a couple of more seniors and I basically asked my manager to step down to my old job or I was potentially going to leave as I couldn't carry onthe way I was. She tried to talk my round, move to new team etc but this was something I needed.

They agreed, and since then I have been happy, it's like I have been depressed all year I just have not been myself, I feel free again and I enjoy underwriting and things are back to normal.

Also the amount of colleague's who have said I'm brave for what I have done and most people will carry on being miserable in my position.

I can also relate to the feeling of performance anxiety and worrying about the job when you're not really wanting to do it, which for some reason is worse than when you are good at it and enjoy it. It really can make you quite ill. It isn't worth it to fill some shoes, I felt perpetually guilty and out of myself. In short, it sucked. Things changed in the company and I left.

I feel severely underappreciated at work. They've come up with a thing saying we can request an appraisal. is that the kinda place I would need to mention this or can I mention it to my bosses at any time? I want them to put me up to 2nd line with a pay raise but I can't threaten then with leaving until I have a better offer somewhere else.

Has anyone done this before? How did you do it? I've got statistics to back my claims up of how good I am, but I'm getting annoyed of them acting as if I'm a certain role but not paying me for it/nor calling me it so I'm doing 2 roles at once.

It doesn't help my friend from work (who I went to 'dam with) had an interview yesterday for another job and if he leaves I feel it's going to be unbearable for me.

You're calling it 'dam now? You little junkie.... :lol:

If you can request an appraisal at any time then that is probably the way to go. That should be a meeting to evaluate your performance and to plan for the future, so it would be perfect to show them the stats on how good you are and to tell them where you want to be in the near future.

I can't help with your friend, he's got to do what works for him.

Got an appraisal Week Monday and my boss says he's looking forward to it. Fingers crossed.

A colleague's just cancelled a meeting with another colleague (who's travelled for a couple of hours to be here) because another meeting is taking longer than she thought and she "doesn't have time now". Just cut the meeting that's already overrun short FFS, don't completely waste someone else's day. Such a shitty attitude and disrespect for other people's time. :fp:

does she know the other person travelled in?

If I'm the person who travelled in, there isn't a world in which I'm not going to assert control of the situation by going directly to the meeting room said person is in and dragging them out to impress upon them that 1) I understand meetings can overrun and it's unforeseen; 2) however I didn't make this journey to be cancelled on at the last moment; 3) you need to make your excuses and leave because we're doing the meeting now.

Yes, she knew he'd travelled in especially for it. She just got her PA to pass on the news that "we'll have to reschedule".

She's a director and he's part of the sales team, so she probably has the view that his time's not as important as hers - she does have a tendency to think she's above the rules and can do whatever she wants. I'd have been pretty livid if I'd been the one who'd come in. :lol:

If my meeting was so important I couldn't leave, Is probably push the other guy back but then take them somewhere nice for dinner as part of the meeting and apologise alot.
