My latest creation is going to our security teams for approval and if approved will go into production for about 1000 colleagues in our claim department.

I built a system that will let colleagues upload cftv / dashcam footage from customers against an insurance claim number and it will then convert any video format to mp4 so it can be viewed in the built in html5 viewer for claims processing.

Right now the vids are manually converted and put on CD and kepr in a safe so only the local team can do the work, this will mean any claim team (we have 3 sites with claims) can work on a claim making it much much more efficient.

I case it isn't known I work for an insurance firm on the south.

Do you worry much that one single typo would compromise the whole thing and potentially bring down the company?

Hahaha I tend to spell stuff wrong but I don't make that many typos when writing code, not in how the code works anyways, occasionally there are odd variable names I have to go through and update due to misspelling and typoing in the variable name.

Had a call from an agency who want to put me forward for a job with the worlds third largest Ice Cream manufacturer, for at least £500/year more than I'm on now, but a commute of a bit less than 40 miles rather than the 75 miles I have now, plus a strong prospect of international travel.
And another agency who are interested in putting me forward for a job as a technical lead for a global training company in charge of a team split across the UK and USA for at least £1,500/year more than I'm on now and a commute of 20 miles.

Aye go on then.

Well they're only putting me forward at the moment, no guarantee of even getting an interview yet.

Not sure which one I'd prefer really.

The "Ice Cream one" is a bit less money and further to commute, but sounds like it'll have more international travel to places all over the world which is something I've always wanted a job doing.
The other one is more money, closer to home and has potential for getting towards managerial positions, but sounds like travel would be limited.

Struggling with health as usual but I do get the most wacky jobs sometimes, now someone wants me to do signage/wrap on their "race car" (what that actually is remains to be seen) and if they can get a discount if I put my business name on it.

Well.. I don't do anything of that scale but maybe I could pull off door panels or something. Weird time of year as well as gearing up for xmas which is either going to be successful or hellish, both hopefully.

So which one of you miserable bums is this...

https://workplace.stackexchange.com/que ... tmas-party

I've just started a new job, which I'm enjoying. I recently received an email, asking all employees to choose what they would like to eat at the work Christmas party. I personally would not choose to go to such an event, as I tend to avoid social activities like these, however, the event is during working hours.

I responded to the email (to the sender, not all) asking if the event was optional, to which I was told 'no', and that if I really didn't want to go (I don't), I would have to take the afternoon off as holiday.

This seems unfair to me, and I'm not sure what my options are. I feel I shouldn't have to take holiday to avoid a social event, and I think it's weird that this event even happens within working hours - I should be doing my job instead of attending a social event that I don't care for, and isn't related to my role.

So, my questions is this: is my company allowed to force me to take holiday to avoid the event? If they're not, what should my next course of action be?

This is within the UK.

What a miserable sod. You get out of work to eat Christmas lunch. What is not to like? Even if I was surrounded by people I hated, it is still getting out of work.

Surely wishing to avoid social interaction to that extent is asking for a firing eventually.

I can understand people who do not wish to engage. But I cannot understand this.

Presumably free Christmas Lunch and getting out of doing work to eat it. Sounds amazing.

Miserable git basically.

Some people find it very uncomfortable to engage in social activities, so would genuinely prefer to avoid them and just carry on with work.

I think it must be pretty horrible to be that kind of person so I can only have sympathy for them really.

I think the most pressing question here is who the strawberry float has a mandatory Christmas party on work's time?

I've been in my job for four years and I've never even gone to the xmas piss up with my colleagues, I sure as gooseberry fool wouldn't sit down for a meal with them.

Whatever it is or it isn't, in that particular company it's going to be seen as negative. It wouldn't hurt to attend, even if you maybe won't enjoy it. Unfortunately for this guy it's not the last they'll see of situations like that.

Whereas I've been in my job for ten years and have had a Christmas lunch during work time with my team in all but one of those years.

I recently quit my job after having panic attacks due to a sense of being completely rubbish at it. It's a bit of an organisational shambles (v small business) and just wasn't a good fit for me at all, but is a big blow to the confidence and all that.

Don't have anything else lined up and finding it a struggle to work up the motivation to find and apply to stuff. Feels like us humans have gotten ourselves into a real gooseberry fool societal situation where we're forced to trade stress for money.

What if we gave communism another shot, guys? Maybe this time it'll work?
