I agree with Brer, without Halo (and Halo 2) the Original Xbox would have sank without trace. Having bought one to play Halo I was happy to find Project Gotham Racing to be a joy, I had a PS2 at the same time and I think people forget but the Xbox was more powerful, certainly the games looked a step up graphically. I remember GTA San Andreas ran like a dog on my PS2 so got it on Xbox and it was far better.

It's the prequel to my fave game console of all time so I'm glad it was made.

PS2 was the defacto console back then, everybody had one.

As for exclusives, this was Microsoft's best console. Halo 1/2 were revolutionary, Forza and PGR were arguably the best 2 racers of the gen, so many great RPGs like Fable, KOTOR and Jade Empire, not forgetting Sega's exclusives like JSR Future, Crazy Taxi 3 and HOTD 3.

How times change.

I'm really fond of the Xbox. The original "Duke" controller was a monstrosity but I loved the later "S" controller and that's when I jumped aboard. I'm one of those seemingly rare folk who like the look of the machine; it isn't really that big (the subsequent, universally-adored 360 was a similar size, but just at a different angle!) and I still think it looks stylish. It's the console that has my favourite colour variations, too - yes, even better than the N64 and DS machines! The classic black is cool, but the translucent green and clear models are just stunning.

I had held off from the PS2 and the GameCube, picking up my Xbox in early 2003. For over four years it was my main game machine and that was great; it had the slight technical edge over the two rival machines and the hard drive made it seem super-advanced  .

It's only within the past few months that I've not had an Xbox setup. Space limitations have meant that it was retired to a cupboard but I may have to dig it out again soon. Xbox  .

Edit: Oh, man. I wondered how long it'd be before PlayStation sales figures were posted here :fp: .

To be fair, that gif also states the sales figures for all the other consoles of that generation ;)

I only briefly owned an XBOX. I bought it to play Shenmue 2 and because I didn't like how buggy Halo 2 was on 360. I kinda regret trading it in now as I feel I should have investigated it's back catalogue a little more thoroughly. There were a few exclusives I always liked the look of such as Otogi and Stubbs the Zombie. Maybe I'll pick another one up some day and give it a fairer chance.

I loved the original Xbox, getting one for Christmas and playing Halo in co-operative with a friend absolutely made Christmas that year. Brilliant experience. It was a great console overall though, Xbox Live started really changing the way multiplayer console gaming worked, it had features we take for granted now like proper onboard memory and it had the best versions of most multiplatform games. Playing GTA whilst playing my own soundtrack from the Xbox hard-drive was brilliant.

It also had a great range of exclusives, something which has slipped further and further away from Microsoft leading to the current sorry state of the Xbox One. They keenly chased down a range of experiences although we still had the likes of Halo, Project Gotham and Forza we also got stuff like Quantum Redshift, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jet Set Radio Future and Rallisport Challenge and even stuff that wasn't' great but was at least an attempt at something different, like Fusion Frenzy and Blinx.

I had a lot of fun with mine until it sadly died on me and stopped reading discs properly!

I never had a PS2 (or original PS for that matter). I had a DC and then a GC. When I came to choosing between the Xbox and PS2, I think it came down to the Xbox having GTA3, Halo and being technically better where as the PS2 only had GTA3. As it turns out, I didn't think that Halo was anywhere near as good as people on the forum thought it was (I was always thinking "when does this start getting good") and I abandoned GTA 3 as I just wasn't that keen on it. I should have just stuck with the GC and DC.

Yes?

To be fair Xbox 360 was the height of MS's great exclusives, Crackdown and Gears easily over shadow QR, Panzer Dragoon and JSR.

I think on the original Xbox there was a lot more variety though, even with stuff I mentioned like Fusion Frenzy and Blinx there was an attempt to add some variety to the line-up (even if some of them weren't exactly great!). The Xbox 360 had a great start in that regard but by the end I found it very stale in terms of first party content, it was essentially just a Forza/Gears/Halo machine which is a trend that has carried on to the Xbox One. Fine if you love those games I guess but I lost interest in all three series' a good while ago.

I was lucky enough to win an Xbox way back when. If I hadn't done, I may have missed out on it. I loved the S controller, and have very fond memories of games like JSRF, Hitman 2, Burnout 2, Sega Soccer Slam, Fable, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jade Empire, Tiger Woods 2004, OutRun 2, Soul Calibur 2 and Ghost Recon. Also, there were plenty of quality games that I didn't play or owned on other systems; Half-Life 2, Super Monkey Ball, Sudeki, Halo, Amped, Morrowind, KOTOR, Conker Live & Reloaded, Dead or Alive 3, Doom 3, Max Payne 1 +2, PGR games, Oddworld games, Rallisport Challenge, etc.

A good console which bought hard drives and online play to the forefront, and paved the way for one of the best systems ever.

Still got my original Xbox. And it's plugged in too! It's in my boys playroom but must admit it doesn't get used. Still got a few games for it.

And whoever slagged off Halo needs shooting. Back in it's day that was an AWESOME game. I played it through on all 4 difficulties (still to this day the only game I've ever played on multiple difficulties) and the differences were there. Legendary was a great challenge back then.

I actually bought one of these, Halo was unbelievable. The controller was terrible. I liked I could put my music on it. Can't think of the other games I ever bought tbh.

Are you complementing him on his penis size? It's huge in that image!

The Xbox was the one console I never really had any interest in. I had a PS2 and Gamecube and while someone at school I knew had an Xbox, he was the only person I knew in our entire school with one. Never really liked it. I was playing Halo on the PC, so going to Halo on console it felt like a downgrade.

Yep and that it's also made of plastic.
