I'm an absolute fanny with theme parks but I love the rides when I'm on them. I didn't go on a proper roller coaster until I was 18 and was peer pressured into going on the Hulk at Universal Studios. I went back to Universal last year for a day with my girlfriend on our America holiday and we managed to go on every major ride in a day with premium passes. The Rocket is amazing.
I would like to go back to Alton Towers as I was a massive wimp when I went on a school trip. For some reason Obvlivion has manifested in my mind as a terrifying roller coaster so I'd like to overcome this fear.

I can see why it would it is a very sudden rush rather than a drown out experience so it gets the nerves going more that say Smiler.
I get a nervous dresd everyone I am tick tick ticking up the hill and going round the bend at the top even though I have done it like 10 time.

I’ll only ever go on Oblivion if there’s no queue. It’s a bit too... boring for a big queue. I really don’t like the drop, though

Have either of you been on the Rocket? That start seems like it would be similar to Oblivion* but it carries on for much longer.
*That's what I tell myself anyway.

I've only ever been to UK parks not really got the money to go to America and stuff. Plus I figure the mega stuff out there will ruin Merlin stuff for me and I quite like the Merlin parks and visiting them every few weeks through the year.

Absolutely love rollercoasters and 2017 has been the year of the rollercoaster in our house - we had our first ever Merlin Annual Pass and we also went to Florida in March/April too. We have done the following theme parks:
- Disney's Magic Kingdom
- Disney's Hollywood Studios
- Disney's Animal Kingdom
- Disney's Epcot
- Universal's Islands of Adventure
- Universal Studios Florida
- SeaWorld Orlando
- Alton Towers
- Chessington World of Adventures
- Thorpe Park
- Blackpool Pleasure Beach
Sooooo many awesome rides this year. It's been a blast

You only have to go to mainland Europe to find parks like that
American parks are all skirt though, like, sure big rides and some good stuff, but they're all the bloody same 90% of the time...

It is still expensive with channel crossing, hotels, entrance, currency exchange etc. Plus the stress of the wife driving and navigating in another country will make me want to kill her plus I don't speak any language other than English so Compared to an hour and 35 minutes to Thorpe, chessington and LegoLand.
It is more of a ballache than im willing to go through and expensive.

I love theme parks but haven't been to one in almost a decade. I did go on some coaster on Brighton Pier a few months back but it was just painful and gave me bruises.
It's great that Alton are finally getting a wooden coaster but I expect there will be some 'world's first's' gimmick added to ruin it but make it more marketable.

I’ve not been to a theme park for a long time. I think the last time was when I was in Florida but that was about 15 years ago. As my lad gets older though I will be taking him to a few, it’s going to be some time before he is old enough for the big rides though!
The best experience I ever had at a theme park was at Universal Islands of Adventure in Florida. We were there not long before Halloween and they opened up the theme park and all the rides at night. To add to the scariness they had people wandering around the park dressed up like Jason from the Friday 13th movies, if they came near you they would chase you with fake (I hope, but you know, Florida…) chainsaws.
They also had haunted houses dotted around, the most girly scream I have ever uttered was in there when a woman jumped out of the shadows at me.
I don’t know if the British parks ever do anything like that, but they should.

Give Chessington and LegoLand a go, they have loads of stuff the little'uns can do, especially LegoLand that has a big paddling pool fountainy waterfall play area thing in Duplo land.
And yeah the parks do Fright Nights, Thorpe and Alton do horror mazes and things with actors and gooseberry fool and Chessington does a sort of kid friendly creepy crawley halloween type thing.

He’s been to the zoo and other animal parks and city farms nearby, but I have held off taking him anywhere like Legoland as I am not sure he’d get much out of it and I am tight fisted and don’t want to pay for something he might not get much out of.
I think 2 will be the right age for him to start really enjoying trips out like that though. Bristol to Windsor should only take around 90 minutes so a perfect length of time for him to nap in the back of the car.

Makes sense and had I not had Merlin passes I wouldn't have gone either but I'm glad I did as bug is always mega happy looking at stuff and running about, waving at the train and the animals on the boat ride and things, they have a pretty good fairy tale river thing that she loves too gets all happy and stuff when she sees the lego models of the 3 pigs and aladdin and stuff, plus for Merlin parks kids are free up to the age of 3 so that takes the edge off

I'm usually a cynical git when I see adverts for theme parks, with the kids waking the parents up early and what not. But holy jesus I changed my tune when I went to Universal Studios last month. I've never come so close to spontaneously crying with joy. It's literally the happiest place on Earth. Even the staff look absolutely beaming. It probably helps that it's in Japan where everyone is happy anyway, but it was just (brace yourself) magical.
The Jurassic Park but is just like being in Jurassic Park. It's amazing. I reckon I would have fainted or gone into a coma if I'd gone there as a kid.
