Your wife is right.
The second you allow people to start using your driveway like that they assume it's always ok and it'll happen all the time. Better to nip it in the bud at the start.

When you work in a contact centre that seems to be the only part of your employer that has to work on a bank holiday and you get a caller opening with "I didn't think you'd be open today"... then why the strawberry float did you call us you idiot?

Can you not ironically put the phone down and claim you're just an elaborate voicemail message?

Birds on Facebook saying they're fat when there's absolutely nothing on them just to get somebody to say as much.

Interesting because people can get very territorial. One person who lives near us with 3 cars parks one on their drive, none in the garage and two directly outside their house. If anyone should park outside their house (which is not an allocated space) they will return to notes on their car informing them that they can't park there! In Drumstick's situation if he has allocated parking, that is closer to his driveway than just a space for anyone so although awkward, his wife has done the right thing.

Yes?

I'd tend to side more with Drum in this situation to be honest, I'm fairly chill about stuff like parking spaces and wouldn't want to risk a situation wherein my neighbours have a problem with me for the sake of a parking space, especially if I only had one car to use in the space. But hey, that's just me I guess, I wouldn't say there's an issue with the way the situation has been resolved either.

My mum's neighbours recently had an issue with the parking - the street is a small cul de sac with eight houses and not enough parking for all of the residents - there are two cars regularly at my mums house and three or four with another vehicle, a work van at number 1. They're on the corner of the terrace so have a driveway, but the two kids park their cars on the corner of the road, as is the work van.

I tend to park on the main road away from the street, where there are no houses. The bloke at number 1 was asked politely by his neighbour if he could park his work van away from the street as well because there isn't enough space for the rest of the cars on the road. His response was that it's a free street, he'll park where he wants and it's not acceptable to ask him to move his van.

I feel like that's rude and a bit disrespectful, given that the cars tend to be outside no. 2 and no. 3 at any given time.

Can we get a picture of the parking situation?

If they're not labelled and there's no signs saying that the spaces are for residents only I'm not sure if your girlfriend would really have any kind of defence.

If you really want rid of it look it up on one of those MOT/Tax sites and see if it all checks out, and if not phone the police and claim it's been abandoned.

Frank, not sure if you were responding to myself or Cora, but yeah I can get a picture. The spots are directly in front of my house, clearly part of my plot, they just aren’t numbered. Each house has its own set of spaces. Nobody parks on the side of the road because there isn't a need. And the car isn’t there anymore as the missus got the neighbour to ask her guest to move it elsewhere.

I just think the territorial approach over something that literally does not matter or make a difference to us is kind of pathetic and embarrassing.

Yeah, it was at you, don't worry :P

Oh, so they were actually parking on your drive, almost? I thought it might have been in front of the house but still on the road, if you get me.

If it was just on the road and it wasn't so much dedicated spaces but simply space for anyone to use then it'd be fair enough. Even if it's outside your house then unless there's a sign or something saying it's a dedicated spot for Number 12 or something then anyone can park there (Provided there aren't yellow lines or whatnot).

When it's an actual driveway though it's vital to nip in the bud other people parking there 'accidentally'. You might think it doesn't matter, but it's something that very easily spirals into the visitors for next door thinking they can use it as their own spot, and if they have multiple visitors then they just take up both your driveway spaces. If other people start spotting it too then word will spread that it's just a free for all space, so suddenly other neighbours with more cars than driveway spots get the idea that they can use it on a regular basis too.
It's especially important to take this approach if you live next door to bigcheez2k3.

Adverts for plane and train fares that are "one way". How many people go just one way compared to those who want/need a return?

Yes?

It's bollocks isn't it, it needs stopping like the advertising of interest fees without including line rental has been.
