I feel that pain, Qikz. I'll now only order from Amazon if I can use the Local Collect (Post Office) delivery service. I live in a flat and Amazon Logistics deliveries are too unreliable i.e. delivery Is attempted either before or after the due day; and the drivers can never pass the security door.

There are certain advantages that come with being white (or rich, or male, or straight, or able, or...) in Western society. I hope you would at least agree with that. The idea is that there are therefore certain specific disadvantages that predominantly affect ethnic minorities (or the poor, or females, or gay people, or the disabled, or...), and that you might have a skewed perspective on these disadvantages if you have not experienced them first-hand, or have not experienced them in the context of living in a society which is oppressive towards you based on that characteristic.

The idea isn't that straight white men (or whatever) all have perfect, easy lives -- this is obviously ridiculous. The goal of bringing this up in a discussion should be to provide context to people's opinions -- "Well, okay, you're anti-abortion, but have you considered you might feel differently if you were a woman?" It's not supposed to be "Uh, you're male so up yours, shut up" -- but at the same time, you can see why a woman might get frustrated having to argue this and I think that's where the angry, unreasonable posts you've presumably seen come from. It's counterproductive for sure, but I have a lot of sympathy.

After all, I would probably snap at you and Fade all the time if I didn't have the privilege of being able to view your misinformed opinions from a detached perspective. ;)

See I can agree to some extent with the first part of the statement, although as I said before, just because someone appears to be white, being a member of other groups that you mention (immigrant, disabled, gay etc.) could mean that their experience is very different and therefore it is stereotyping to say that all white people experience the world in one way, whereas all non-white people experience it in this other way.

This is what I believe Fade was complaining about, at least that's how I read it. It wasn't that someone thinks that some people in group X have a different world view that those in group Y can't understand but rather that all people of group Y have no right to speak because they are members of group Y.

You're being pretty reductive. Of course not all white people experience the world one way and all non-white people experience it the other. But there are situations where being white benefits people who are white in a certain way. White people do not have to worry about being more likely to be singled out by police for a stop and search purely because of the colour of their skin. Men do not have to worry that they will be overlooked for a job, because the interviewer thinks they're of the age where they're going to go off and get pregnant. Privileges can be as specific as the criteria you choose to measure them by.

If someone is saying your opinion is invalid simply because you belong to group Y, then they're being a dick. However, it's not hard to understand why, on certain issues in particular, people will be dismissive of the opinions of group Y if they aren't beneficial to those in group X. For example, when pro-choice women might disregard the opinions of a man on the subject of abortion, because abortion has never been about male bodies, but has been legislated on, almost exclusively, by men for all of known time so far. Nobody likes having their opinion dismissed, but you can see why people might consider the importance of some group's opinions to be a bit further down the pecking order.

I think these are the key points here, I understand the subtlety that you're talking about but to me it seemed that Fade's encounter was with a person who just automatically assumed that his opinion was invalid because he is white, and that is stereotyping, which is what he was getting at.

Its the same with parents who use the "you don't have kids so you couldn't possibly understand" argument whenever any non-parents try to suggest they might be wrong about something.

When people take a trolley through the "BASKET ONLY" Checkout in the supermarket.

Someone called her up on it and she said "but I could fit all of this into a basket"

I'm sure you could fit that 20 pack of Foster's and your weeks shop into a basket you strawberry floating cancerous banana split.

Nobody said anything and we all lined up nicely, hating her silently in our heads.

People that don't carry around various payment options, so if one thing goes Fanny Cradock they're stuck up a turkey's arse.

Was it actually a basket only line or a certain number of items or less line? I've been challenged before by someone in a ten items or less line when I had one of those small trolleys with less than ten items. The checkout person told them that I was allowed as it wasn't a basket only till but she still carried on moaning saying that I was now making her late as I was in front of her.

I had a minor panic the other day because I'd forgotten my wallet and I didn't have any food for lunch. Then I remembered I can pay using my phone and I felt like such a badass :datass:.

I have fingerprint access for bank of Scotland and tesco banking apps and now manually entering a passcode and number on Santander seems like an awful hassle.

Went to normal pub for board games last night.

They'd changed the menu (in a good way - much more limited, but like more of the stuff if that makes sense)

But they're now serving in...small wooden boxes/crates (like this, but longer)

Image

The width was just about a burger size - but meant you couldn't cut/handle burger easily. Burger placed at one end so you had one edge to try and "flip" the burger out.

The chutney with them (previously in small dish) now in individual sealed mini jam jars.

Plus the servers can't easily see in to work out what order they've got (beyond "burger") meaning trouble when delivering several varieties of burgers...

Oh that is strawberry floating ridiculous. What the hell is wrong with a bloody plate!

The only non-standard serving item I have found that I approve of is at a pub near me where if you only order chips they are in a pint jug, which is awesome when they are busy as you can hold it and it sort of works well on a table.

We ended up taking all the contents out (onto napkins on the table), flipping the boxes and then placing food on top.

Much easier to eat and cut/handle the food.

strawberry float the lack of plates in some restaurants drives me nuts! Theres a pub near my parents house that does great food, we go there regularly but certain dishes are served on wooden board or slates and its a pain in the strawberry floating arse.

I got a burger there at the weekend and it came on a chopping board and had a steak knife stuck through it. This meant the chips had to be in some kind of weird cup on top of the board instead of everything just being on a plate. It was all delicious but I was cursing the need for a board. Or at least I was until dessert arrived, and it came on a slate, with a scoop of ice cream on it. :fp:
