I get annoyed at countless taking ages together etc cards out etc. When they have a decent phone and could just use android/apple pay

They might have used their card three times already that day so they have to put their pin in. My wife's credit card also doesn't have contactless which is baffling...

Speaking of cards, using them in the US. :dread:

Here, it's all very consistent, you can either use tap, or if the store has an older machine, you will insert the chip. I don't think I've seen a place that has you swipe for about 10 years now. Also if you are paying at a restaurant they have an extra screen on the machine that allows you to add a tip if you like.

In the US, tons of places still use swipe, which from what I know is less secure than the chip, even though their machines have chip readers! Then if you want to tip at a restaurant you pay the bill once, and then you have to add how much you want to tip on the receipt, which means that

1) They have to do two transactions! This might not seem like a big deal but many bank plans here in the US and Canada only have a certain amount of free transactions a month, afterwards it's can be up to a dollar per transaction!

2) You need to trust them to put the right amount or you need to carefully check your statement to make sure everything matches up.

Why is everything there so backwards :|

I quite like it when the money leaves my account immediately and not in 2-3 working days time.

On the contrary, it can be quite handy a couple of days before payday...

I wasn't aware there was a difference in the processing time for transactions.

Contactless payments are authorised offline if they're below £15, which means the terminal does the authorising, not your bank. This means the value of the payment won't be deducted from your available balance straight away. When the retailer then submits all their 'tickets' at the end of the business day, or in some cases, the next day entirely, your available balance will be affected. A few days after that, the payment will debit and it'll affect your account balance.

This is why a contactless payment below £15 can be put through on a card that's been blocked as lost/stolen, or if you have no money.

Colleagues.

"You're eating a banana!"
"Yep"
"Where did you get it from?"
"I brought it from home"
"I wish I had a banana"

Just...what is she expecting me to say to that?

It's inane bullshit like this that I get subjected to on a daily basis. Drives me nuts. :fp:

That's what I was thinking. Maybe he can bring another banana tomorrow and then get the free shag.

Yes?

I would like to take a moment to appreciate the interchangeability of nuts and bananas in this post.

We went out in Cardiff one night and brought some McDonald's back to the room. In the lift some guy looked at the bag and said, "where did you get THAT?!"

Me, "...McDonald's..."

Him, " oh cool, cheers!"

It's bollocks isn't it, it needs stopping like the advertising of interest fees without including line rental has been.

Banks charge line rental now? Why the strawberry float wasn't I informed of this. Wankers!

I looked into it because I was bored and verified some stuff I knew roughly about. Chip & Pin was invented by the Scotsman James Goodfellow OBE and at some point the government made it mandatory or something, and old cards were quickly phased out/replaced, in around 2006. There were a lot of advertising campaigns about it on TV and in print that basically meant everyone knew it was better. In the US they probably never bothered so everything is still insecure as strawberry float. They didn't take on C&P for about 10 years. Of course Canada gets everything good the UK has just 10x more expensive and delayed by snow and highway closures, so you still got it, but only a few years before the US caught up with it.

Is the US missing the instant bank transfer stuff we have as well, like they ahve to wait days for where as we do a transfer and a second later it is done.

He might have met where was the McDonalds (e.g. "Down the road on the 2nd the left") but decided you were a bit simple.
