You'd have to be a weird sort or banana split to physically remove a socket when someone will inevitably need it. The installation fee will refer to putting in the new socket which is just a bt engineer anyway.

OK, that's good to know, thanks.

Apparently the old owner removed the socket because he didn't like the location of it, and the wire looked untidy where it crossed the hallway.

Wtf. So he had no phone and no internet? Criminal.

I just wanted to check this for you. Yes, they usually subsidise it in the contract so it's free or it costs about what you're saying. http://www.choose.net/media/guide/featu ... ation.html

To connect it they just do some magic things and can poll the socket somehow to see if it's active, maybe by measuring resistance/impedance on the line or something. Sometimes the connection is a separate fee. But seeing as it's just some electrical stuff that would be pretty gooseberry fool.

I'd be livid if some mug just showed up to throw the router on the floor and plug things in.

He owned the house, but it was his elderly mother living here. She died a while back, and he had the whole place done up before selling it, new carpets, repainted walls and door frames, etc. Apparently this involved removing the "untidy" phone line, too. I can't really complain too much. We've ended up moving into a place that needs no work doing to it at all, but still.

I knew there'd probably be some reconnection fee, as there was no active phone line, but I wasn't sure if the fee would cover physically reinstalling a line and socket. It's one of those charges that's knocked off if you go for a more expensive plan, but we figured two of us could get by fine on their 17mb line-rental only plan, so we're paying full whack up front.

Getting connected to the Internet never gets old. Especially since it generally comes with a faster speed.

Those few days with no Internet are probably the healthiest, most productive, most boring days of modern times however.

People with big bags on the metro. If your bag is touching me, YOU are touching me.

Especially appropriate for people with large rucksacks, who seem to think that just because it's behind them, it doesn't exist.

Two and a half weeks. :dread:

It's my own fault for not sorting anything until moving day, though.

It's not like we haven't got plenty else to be getting on with in the mean time, though. We just miss having access to iPlayer/Netflix in the evening when we want to relax on the sofa. So long as the installation goes smoothly on the 6th, because my girlfriend will be back at work and need internet access to upload lesson plans.

I remember when I moved into a rented flat 7 or 8 years ago there were phone lines and sockets in the place but BT told us that they needed to be reconnected to the exchange and that it would cost £100+ (I can’t remember the exact amount). We had no choice but to agree and they set a date for an engineer to come a few weeks later. For some reason I plugged a phone in a few days before the engineer was due to come and we had a dial tone. I sent the shittiest and angriest letter I have ever written to BT and forced them to refund me.

BT. :x :x :x

Yeah. I did that when I was a student. Just don't make a call on it and it's fine to check the line that way.

I never remember to sort out Internet before I move either.

The Metro is a strawberry floating nightmare on all fronts, it has no redeeming qualities. Although I will give props to the driver that picked my iPhone up and handed it in.

People on esclators who stand on the right but stick their bags/elbows etc. out into the left side and then give you a put-out look when you have to shove past them. What do they think is going to happen? Its almost as bad as people congregating in groups at the top or bottom of stairs/escalators. I mean, they're in these cavernous train stations yet apparently the best place to stand around is at the busiest points of through-traffic. strawberry floating geniuses

I spend at least 2 hours a day, 5 days a week at its mercy and have noticed it getting progressively worse over the last decade. When it works its almost bearable but more often than not there's something wrong with it.

From Sunderland to Newcastle and back?

I guess you've been doing it for much longer than me (I only started Jan 2015; East Boldon to Regent Centre). I think I find myself far more annoyed by the people on it and their selfish ways, than by the failings of the system. You're right, though, it's screaming out for some investment/upgrades.

Yep, Sunderland to Longbenton and back Mon-Fri for the last 10 years. The worst thing was when they changed the lines over so Sunderland rather than South Shields trains go to Airport.

That so many people keep writing "our" as "are".

That's right up there with "could of" and "should of".

Viewing a house, and the online description of the place doesn't mention that it's a complete disaster. Place was a building site. Broken chimney, bowed outside wall. Weirdness inside.

I'm quite new to this, so I guess this is a thing that happens.

Ignoring that estate agents are bastards anyway, it's possibly because the description was outsourced to someone that hadn't even seen the property to begin with.

"A stunningly spacious and fully furnished kitchen..." - never seen it before in my life.
"Incredible value" - dunno the price.

Excuse the pun, but it's so low rent.

Surely though that's just wasting everyone's time? Better to be upfront so people know what they're getting.

It's like fat girls on Tinder who disguise the fact they're fat.
