I just am embarrassed by people with that kind of hypocritical mentality.

To clarify, I was trying to argue that you shouldn't punch someone because you disagree with them when someone pulled the white privilege card on me.

Are you arguing that someone pointing out how your position of privilege might be affecting your assessment of a situation is comparable to actual racism/sexism?

I'm saying that assuming someone acts or behaves a certain way, or has certain life experiences because of their gender or skin colour is literally what racism and sexism are

Racism = the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race.

Sexism = prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, on the basis of sex.

Therefore if you are for social equality, but try to discredit someone's opinion simply because they are white and male, you are a hypocrite.

Yeah call people privileged if they actually are, that's fine, but don't assume that someone is or isn't based on their looks when you know nothing about them.

But when society generally ascribes certain positive characteristics to people who are white, and certain negative characteristics to those who are (e.g.) black, then being white in that society is a privilege of itself.

Obviously I don't know the details of the particular interaction that annoyed you, but pointing that out isn't inherently unreasonable.

Even if what you said was 100% fact, how does that make what I said false?

You can't say you hate stereotypes and than go and stereotype someone you don't know because they are white or male. That is hypocrisy whichever way you look at it.

I am white, I obviously don't think "all white people are the same." Where did that come from? It's just misdirection.

We aren't arguing that statement, obviously racism is shitty whoever it's aimed at. Is that what actually happened, though? It sounded more like someone called you out for arguing a point without really taking the time to understand to understand how minorities might feel about the issue, and told you that your being white has likely skewed your perspective, which isn't really 'stereotyping all white people' or whatever.

It's obviously hard to chat about exactly what happened though because you refuse to tell us.

Ive just been messing around in this thread.

But in order to judge if the person/article/TV show/whatever you are talking about is being racist against white people or sexist against men, we need to know what you're talking about.

It's like if I said "You know what annoys me? When people say people are being silly!". Sure that might be annoying and we might all agree, but it's hard to tell without knowing what you're talking about.

Nobody is saying that all white people are the same, but what they do have in common, is that white people in the first world will never experience life in the same way a person from any other ethnic background will. Privilege is a symptom of racism, or any other power imbalance based on prejudice.

So apparently me expressing my opinion is privileged. I asked her to explain and she hasn't said anything since.

Although another woman defended me and said:

Which was nice. Plus over half the people who liked my comment were women. So I must have said something right.

Yes and you counter that by treating people as individuals and not being prejudice towards them.

That includes assuming someone has a great life, or that they haven't experienced suffering because they are white.

At least 1 in 10 cars on the way home were doing it.

As bad as that is people who only have one working headlight so it almost appears as if it's a motorbike. Even worse are people with one working headlight that is also stuck on high beam
