I'm assuming you're using an agency that specialises in your industry/sector..if not, my only advice would be to do so. General recruitment agencies seem to be universally useless.

This is exactly it. When they want to show their boss they're being proactive it's all systems go.

Funnily enough there's a two person operation who got in touch earlier and they're already sending me details.

Yes, they are all cocks these days. If you don't hear back on something, pretty much forget it because if you are in the running, you can be damn sure they will follow up (they have commission at stake after all). If you don't represent any money for them, you are nothing.

I tend to get the best leads from recruiters who actively call me up from my LinkedIn or Reed profile etc. and then I somehow manage to pull off an impression over the phone and I get placed shortly after. So I would work on the online profiles and take those calls when they come in, instead of waiting around for an agency.

I spent over an hour with one last week, in person, talking through all my stuff, what I want to do etc. Then at the end of our meeting he said, "well if you haven't heard from me in a few weeks, give me a call and we'll see if there's anything you're interested in on our books"

YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO STRAWBERRY FLOATING RING ME TO HELP ME FIND WORK .

And another one, phone call this time but another hour plus the time it takes to put together the portfolio etc they want for filing. I specifically said that as well as full time work, i'd be interested in contract work to tie me over in the short term. Heard nothing, then on linkedin just now i saw he posted that they need a 1 month designer to start asap for a contract.

I COULD HAVE STARTED TODAY FFS

Arrrghhhh strawberry floating HELL. Just seen another LinkedIn post from another recruiter I spoke to on the same day, another hour special, has posted asking if anyone has any catalogue design experience for a 3 week contract starting immediately.

YES ME YOU FLOATING MELTER, I TOLD YOU I DID THAT JUST OVER A WEEK AGO ARGHHHHHH

Edit: Incredible, I sent him a message shortly after typing this a day he's responded, but got my name totally wrong.

Recruitment agencies are literally worse than death. Stay away.
They have 0 respect for you. Just use seek or something.

While I did (and know people) go through them to get my job, I first applied via Seek. Nearly didn't bother with the interview when I found out it was an agency.

I had some pretty poor experiences with a couple of agencies when I was moving to Birmingham. The bigger the agency, the worse they are, because you're just a single name on a giant client list, and they'll always have more people coming through the door. I eventually found some decent work through a smaller, family run recruitment agency, who found me a job on almost the same day I went in to have an initial talk with them.

Graffix Design isn't working out
Have you considered porn or prostitution?

(Edit - You realise they just want your CV right now so they can say "We have XXXXX CV's on file!" to employers to market themselves)

Yeah I've had calls about the most random things "I may be interested in" and it's been account manager, property manager etc. I say I'm only looking for creative roles at the moment, and there's this silence like I'm mad.

But yes definitely look into the recruitment agency, ask about the agents experience and the size of their agency, the small outfits are better because they each get a bigger share of commission and they have less clients. The last guy I had was really nice and I think he was co-owner or something.

They are an absolute joke and unfortunately most jobs seem to be locked behind a recruiter at the moment. The only success ive ever had, be that freelance or full time has been direct with the employer, mad catz included in that.

Had a great meeting today, hopefully it leads somewhere.
