Emergency tax.

I don't understand it at all. Emergency tax has never happened to me before - until my last two jobs, and current job.

I worked two jobs in retail before I got the job I wanted. An important condition was that I had to relocate nearer. Until my contract is up on the previous place, I am paying two sets of rent, but I knew on my new salary I could afford to get by (just).

What I didn't expect was for 30% of my wage to be deducted for "emergency tax" - despite having already been EMERGENCY TAXED THE gooseberry fool OUT OF in my last two jobs. This is because I didn't have a p45 from my previous employer. Neither of my last two employers got me a P-whatever in time for me starting the new job, so my money has been taken from me again.

Why the strawberry float is the emergency tax rate higher than normal? Why is taking more of my money an emergency? Surely it'd make more sense to be charged the lower tax rate temporarily while your tax code is worked out - then on the off chance it's the correct amount, the employee isn't left out of pocket for their hard work.
Because they've taken more than I anticipated, I've gone into the overdraft limit to get charged interest. Only just got my tax refund from the previous two jobs. Wasted 15 minutes on the phone today to be told that they don't know when I'll get refunded on my latest overpayment of tax.

Emily: is the tax code they've put you on 747L W1/M1, or BR?

If the former (which is the emergency tax code), you're likely not losing very much. It's going on BR when you get screwed and lose your tax allowance. Lots of myths about emergency tax...

Right, some selfish so and so committed suicide by jumping out of the top floor of our flats at the weekend.
